Usually it seems to take around a week if not more. Good luck!
@MissAsB: Thanks :) It's the first job I've applied to since giving in my resignation at work, so I'm crossing my fingers!
usually days or weeks but not hours. I did once apply for a job int he morning and get a response in the afternoon but it turned out ot be a sales job that was purely commission but they advertised it as a completely different job title
It can take a while.. check when the job says it will be posted until. It will probably be a week or so after that.. the entry job I started at my work I had forgotten I had even applied for it had been so long.
In my experience I've never gotten anything as fast as a day. FH on the other hand applied, interviewed, and was offered his current job all in one day. It really depends I think but honestly I'd give it at least a week.
@bells: Ha yeah I Know I'm being a little obsessive, refreshing my email inbox constantly!! Good to know that it's normal not to get a response back within a few hours.
depends....I've been out of work since last June and have had calls anywhere from 1 day to weeks after I've submitted my resume. Waiting sucks!
I've had as little as overnight and as long as a month :P. There's really no way to tell, so keep hoping :).
@Elarissa: It didn't say when the position started/when it would be posted until :( That would take some of the uncertainty out of it.
@TheFutureMrsLamkin: It really does suck!
@june42011: @jo.lee: Thanks! I know I'm definitely jumping the gun even expecting a response today or tomorrow, lol.
It totally depends on the job. SOme companies have more hoops for resumes to jump through before they reach the people who "really" look at them. Sometimes companies take quite a while deciding who to bring in/phone interview if they are getting a lot of applicants. It all depends! Good luck, though!!
It really depends. If they are actively interviewing for the position and you qualify as a candidate you could hear back right away. Although that has never happened to me. Usually it takes weeks to months for me to hear back. I submitted my resume to the company I currently work for in mid August and didn't hear back until almost October. They weren't considering anyone else, they just took forever to start contacting candidates.
I know it's hard to wait sometimes! Most of the places I am apply to are government jobs which are notoriously slow!
@moderndaisy: wow, that seems like a really long time! I'm hoping it won't take quite that long...
@lefeymw: THAT's the worst. I'd rather just know one way or the other.
Honestly, if you are totally submitting cold to some online site, I woudln't be surprised if you never hear. Companies suck like that lol. Many times companies hvae to post the jobs for hiring process legal purposes, but already have people in mind. I am changing jobs now, and I have applied to 42 jobs online in teh past year. About half I heard absolutely nothing from, and I know that this is common b/c the same thing happens to friends. The other half I often received a confirmation that they got my resume, adn then an email that I was not chosen for an interview.
For full disclosure, all 42 of my jobs were USAjobs.com federal government postings. And also, many people hear back from govt jobs MONTHS, even a year, after they apply. It's different with private sector jobs. And, if someone at teh company knows that you are submitting adn is waiting for it, that's a whole differnet ballgame.
Seems to me like most jobs are gotten through networking or knowing someone. The only "hits" or interviews I have gotten came through networking.
Or hey, maybe my resume just sucks, I don't know lol. My point is, if you really want this, follow up! Call the number or email teh contact person, make sure they received your resume, stay in their minds adn they'll give you an interview just to shut you up.
Job hunting sucks-- good luck!
@Seaside: Unfortunately, there was no contact person/number--it was an online form that I filled out, attached my resume to, and submitted. But that's a good point for future jobs that I apply to.
Honestly, applying to just one job isnt enough most likely. You can send out a hundred resumes and really only expect 10 of them to call you for an interview at most (well in the general business world- may be different for other sectors)
Have you read "what color is your parachute"? I HIGHLY reccommend this book. It gives some great job search techniques as well as helping you identify the right job for you and the right company for you.
@lefeymw: Oh, I know, I'm not planning on only applying to one job. This just happened to be the first job that I found that I really liked the sound of, so I applied ASAP, and am now obsessing over it :) I have about 20 other postings that I want to apply to this week/weekend. :)
I usually hear back between 1-14days. It really depends on the job. I have had times (mainly government jobs) where I havent heard back for 4 months, then was called in for an interview.
Awe I was job hunting today too! Generally for online posting it can be anywhere from a week to never, unless they are a super nice company to at least let you know that you didn't get the job. Good Luck, I hope you get it!
I would say that I have applied for 300+ jobs in a 2 year period. Out of those jobs I heard back from maybe 20-30, had 5-10 interviews. I stopped keeping count because it was just too depressing because no one ever responds, or even sends a receipt email. Maybe it was just the field I was trying to break into??
Good luck with the applications!
Depends on the field, but it takes anywhere from a week to three to get called for an interview in my experience. Don't pin all of your hopes on one job - gotta keep looking and applying even while you're pining after a particular one. In the past year I've had interviews for about 10-15 places, up through 3rd rounds at several.
@hilsy85: With so many people trying for the same job it can take a long time, then again if you do a good cover letter, it can take a day or two. A few months back I put my resume out there and thought I was never going to get a call. A month later I got a call, but the job didn't work out. Good luck to you though.

I submitted a resume this morning at around 7:30am. Haven't heard anything yet...so while I sit here and obsess about it, I was just wondering what you all thought the normal response time was? Have you typically gotten responses/emails back in a day? Two days? A week?
The listing was posted like a month ago, so I'm also thinking that it may have been filled already and they just forgot to take the listing down... :(
