just wondering what everyone else has done. we’d like to have some, but i understand that they’re usually done by your wedding photographer and we’re going to have a long engagement (1.5-3 yrs, haven’t decided yet), and we’re just not ready to start the ‘meaty’ wedding planning. but i don’t want to end up paying for both wedding AND engagement photos when i hear that the e-photos are so often part of wedding photo packages and they’re a great way to test drive your photog.
so when did you guys get your photos taken? were they done by your wedding photographer? and how long was your engagement?

we got engaged dec 08….. our wedding is oct. 2011. We’ve decided to do 2 e-sessions. One will be this spring by a photographer in the area ( we currently live in pittsburgh for FI school) Then we will do another session after we move back home (chicago area) and find our wedding photographer ( we hope to nail that down in the summer, then schedule the e-session for this coming fall.)

We got them done 2 months after we were engaged but we are only having a year engagement and so it was our photog who took them!

We took ours 3 months before our wedding. We did that partly because our schedules were so crazy and that was the soonest we could actually get them done. Oh, and we had an almost 2 year engagement.

- Wedding: April 2011 - The Tribute Golf Club
We got engaged March 09 and our wedding is April 11. We have already booked our wedding photographer, and will be doing engagement pics with her probably this April or May. We’re also having a session in Vegas in August because we love it there and thought it would be cool to have some professional pictures taken while we’re there again on a family trip.

We got engaged Christmas 08 and we’ll be having our e-photos done this Spring.

I’d say wait and take them with your photographer closer to when you do the wedding planning. I doubt you’ll use them for much than save the dates and a slide show at showers, dinners, and the reception, so you may want to wait until closer so you look more like your “self” in them.
We took ours about 3 1/2 months after the engagement, which was about 8 months before the wedding.

We got engaged in June, and will get married this September. We had our e-pics done in November by a girl I work with. = )

We got engaged in June, had our engagement photos right after Thanksgiving, and are getting married in May. We haven’t done anything with our photos yet, but I think we might print out a couple of our favorites to put on the guest book table or something.

I’d wait until you get a photographer and have them done with him/her. We booked our photographer for our 2011 wedding when we got engaged in July, but we won’t be taking engagement photos until we’re about 1 year out!

- Wedding: March 2010 - Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay
ottwawabride makes a good point–it’s a good idea to book a photog and use that photog for the e-session because: (1) you develop a more comfortable relationship with them and in front of the camera; (2) many of them include the e-session in their package; and (3) you get to try the photog out!
as to the timing, i think anything goes! i’ve heard of people getting their e-pics very close to the wedding. we waited over a year after we got engaged, but that was more because of indecision and ambivalence. then we did it, and i love the pics! (our engagement is about 1.5 years).

We got engaged last May, are getting married next July, and will do our e-photos some time this spring. We’re using our wedding photographer who is doing them for free. I want to do them now, but I’m waiting until my hair grows out a lot more (it’s in that weird in-between stage now) and for the weather to get warm enough that we can enjoy being outside without coats on.
