My wedding isn’t until September 2015, but I’m just wondering generally, how long should I leave for ordering BM dresses and time for alterations? One of my BM is doing a semester in Nepal from January-April. Four months would be enough time after she gets back, right? I feel like December is too early to order them and have them just sitting around.

April should be fine. We ordered ours in January for our June 7 wedding and they were in my mid March.

FutureMrs.Huemiller: I would definitely err on the side of ordering in December. I was in a wedding last year in August, and we ordered in February. The dresses didnt arrive until mid July, giving us just a few weeks until the wedding to get them altered. I am getting married next August and plan on having the girls order this month. If you already know what dresses you want, I don’t see any reason to wait. Having the dresses just sitting around isn’t going to hurt anything. I’d rather know for certain the dresses will arrive in time.
Another option is to get her measurements before she leaves, and order her dress for her while she is studying abroad.

I work at a bridal boutique and I recommend 6 months prior to the wedding date. The reason is most bridesmaids designers take up to four months for making the dresses plus add an extra week for delivery to the shop. You also want your girls to have ample time for alterations so add 1-2 months, so you’re already at the 5-6 month mark. Especially now since holidays are coming up and production stops, designers can get back logged and take longer than normal. Always better to have more time than waiting to the last minute and having to pay extra rush fees.

FutureMrs.Huemiller: I ordered 6 months before the wedding. It will depend on the designer for league times. Have you chosen which ones you like yet?

We ordered about 6 months in advance. We were told they take around 4 months to come in, giving us 2 months to have them altered.

My girls ordered theirs a year before. We could have waited but they all wanted to just order them so it would be all set

I can’t remember when we got ours but I chose dresses that were just normal dresses and not BM dresses. I saw one in a shop, got one of them to try it on said “yes” and then had to search high and low for the others. If you have a specific dress in your head and you see it, then go for it. If you aren’t too bothered then wait until 6 months prior.

I ordered my BM dress in late May, and it showed up it first weekend of August, which gave me over 3 weeks to have a local seamstress alter the dress. The wedding took place on Labor Day weekend. I think your friend will be ok holding off ordering until she’s back from Nepal.
Btw, the dress I ordered was an Alfred Sung cocktail style dress, and all I needed to have done was hemming and take in the bodice. So if you do chose a BM dress that is more time consuming to alter, you might wanna keep that in mind, or ask local tailors how long it takes to alter a dress if needed.
Hope this helps!

I ordered their dresses 2 weeks ago for my wedding which isn’t until May. I’ve heard that Dessy dresses can take up to 4 months to make and another month to arrive in Australia and wanted a big buffer in case we need to do alterations. One of my bridesmaids is also living in Bangkok and I won’t be able to give her the dress until April when she flies in for the Hens.

FutureMrs.Huemiller: I would try and do it as soon as you can! My wedding is at the end of April and we ordered dresses in mid-October. We ordered their dresses and they are not expected to arrive until February which will give them just eough time to get altered. I am glad we didn’t wait longer!

I’m not too picky about what I want them to wear. I wanted a deep burgundy color and chiffon fabric, but everything else is up to them to pick. I think we will start looking in December, but if we don’t find anything, we can continue to look while she is away. Then decide when she gets back. Good thing she looks good in everything and is super laid back 😛 thanks for all the advice ladies!!
