Just curious. I found out a week before, and some times people are sorry for me, but all the details were a surprise, and I got to be excited about it for a whole week! And it made it much easier on my FI, who has anxiety. 😛
For the poll, if it’s days, just if you knew the exact day, but not necessarily the time.

I knew he had the ring about a week before he proposed, but I still wasn’t *sure* he would propose until it happened.

That it was DEFINITELY happening? About 2 to 3 weeks – he told me he’d gotten the ring. I knew him well enough that I had a good idea of how he would propose, so it wasn’t a surprise.

I had absolutely no idea. We had been together 5 1/2 years, so we definitely had talked at length in the past about getting married at some point in the future. If I were to guess, I actually thought he would propose about a year and a half later than he actually did — so it was a COMPLETE shock and surprise!

I had no idea it was happening until he was in the middle of it, lol! He hid all the planning well. We were away at a resort and there was a lot of little “clues” throughout the day that something was coming (just abnormal behaviour from him) but I thought I was just being crazy so I told myself to ignore them all.

When he bought the ring, about 2 weeks before, I knew it would happen when the ring came in. About 2 minutes before the actual proposal, I knew it was happening right then.

I had no idea that he was planning to propose! We had never even seriously discussed it. He completely surprised me while we were on vacation, and I’m so happy that it happened that way!

He totally fooled me. We had gone ring “browsing” months before but I didn’t think anything of it because he was still in school. He had the ring made and kept it for 3 MONTHS before he proposed and I had no clue!! Even when he was making his speech in front of my family, I didn’t think it was actually happening 😉

I’d say I knew for a few hours that something was going to happen. FH had been acting strange all day. I really didn’t know that it was a proposal until like 5 minutes before it happened though.

We had looked at rings, but that weekend after he had me convinced we were still a year away from getting engaged. That sneak had already gotten the ring the morning after we looked! He proposed Monday am, surprising the heck out of me!

I stumbled upon this giant ring box his BIL made him by accident (he hid it behind some shoes in our closet, shoes I happened to need for another wedding one weekend), and it was seriously hard to NOT open it to see what was inside. Then my sister was over one day and he had to show her something and I wasn’t allowed to see, so then I pretty much knew.
I did not, however, know when or how he was going to propose until the night of, when he said he needed to give me something when we got home.

@ladyamalthea: Like 30 seconds – I got suspicious when he brought out the sparkling wine, but it was when he fumbled for his pocket that I realised.
I’d just been pleased he’d tidied the dining room.

I knew he had bought a ring (or I was around 90% sure that he had) but I didn’t think it was coming that soon, it was a complete and total surprise when he did.

That it was definately happening? A year out, not a joke. We decided to start planning without a ring so the “formal proposal” happening this Christmas is the worst kept secret in America.
He also bought the ring last Thursday so that’s also another notch on the “it’s coming” belt.
However he’s doing a great job of not telling me exactly what day he’s going to do it, I know it will be sometime between late October and Christmas. I imagine I’ll be able to tell because he’ll be nervous.

I knew it was coming (we had been looking at venues, themes, decorations, invitations, set the date, and made a soft booking at a venue). I didn’t know if he had a ring, but expected that he did (I did not look for it, that thought never crossed my mind). I thought he was going to propose the cruise we took during the first week of July 2012, but he surprised me my proposing a week before we left.
