I had been with my husband for soooo longer before the wedding that it really wasn't too big of an adjustment for me since I'm so used to hearing his name. Also, his last name and my maiden start with the same letter so I think hearing it isn't as jarring. Now.. signing my new name is a whole different story. I still feel super awkward.. I just can't get it to flow as easily as my old signature. Although I will say my new signature is much more legible since I have to concentrate.
Still trying to get used to it. Some days I slip and give/say/write my maiden name. But I'm getting much better at it. :)
I'm kind of used to it, but still not completely. I'm getting pretty good at signing my new name, but just the other week, I had to initial some things, and without even thinking, I just did my initials with my maiden name. When I got to the end to sign it, I was like "oops!" Plus I still have to concentrate when I sign my new last name because there's a stupid "v" in it and those are always difficult for me, haha. My old last name had all easy letters. :P And even though I know my new last name and what my new name is, I think I still think of myself as my original name, haha.
@ Adira.. my new last name has a "v" in it too... luckily it's towards the end so I just scribble through that part.
i'm getting more used to it, but after 3 1/2 months i still forget sometimes. i always have to think before i sign or say my name, and sometimes i will accidently use my maiden name. but it's not as weird now to have his name.
I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling a bit weird with my new name. One of my issues at the moment is not everything has changed over yet. I still only have my new temporary license at this point, so I've been carrying around roughly 1000 forms of ID to convince people that I'm me. Maybe it will be easier after receiving my actual license?
I had to sign my new name 3 times at the DMV because I kept signing the wrong name.
Also, I don't recognize when my name is called (when said with last name) and often have a blank stare on my face while people are waiting for me to respond.
I still slip and introduce myself with my maiden name sometimes; mostly when my parents are around.
It's almost been a year -
Funny you should ask! At our wedding when we were signing our marriage license, our pastor told me to sign with my new last name and what do you think I automatically did??? Yup, signed my maiden name. I litterally said "oh crap" infront of the pastor and then said "well I will just write both names down with my maiden in the middle." So now I will have my maiden in the middle.
Yes its awkward!
I think I'm pretty used to it by now. But I sign my name A LOT. :) Just yesterday my brother sent me a check, and he made it out to me in my maiden name.... it was almost weird seeing it that way again!
I actually like the way his name and my first name sound better than my original last name, so I know it won't take long at all to get used to the amazing transition.
I'm so glad it's not just me having a hard time getting used to my new name. I LOVE my new name and was very excited to take my husband's name...but I still slip up. It's especially bad when I do because I'm an encore and the last name I'm used to is my ex-husband's. Oops!
I still have to think every time I sign my name (which is many times per day). I still have to think before I introduce myself to people. It still sounds funny to me when I hear someone refer to me as Attorney Hisname.
The hardest part is that my husband's sister and I have the same first name. When I hear/see my new name, I always think of her first. My name doesn't really feel "mine" to me yet. It just feels like I'm using my sister-in-law's name.
So, it seems that it may take me awhile to get used to the new one :) I'm just glad that his parents always encouraged me to use their first names, so when I hear Mrs. Hislastname, I don't immediately think of his mom!
Also? Not sure how I feel about being called Mrs. Is it just me, or does it sound like I'm old when I use that?
This thread makes me laugh! I am not married yet, but I admit, I have practiced with his name -- which is TWICE as long as my current name. I know it's going to take a while.
I used my new last name at my job for 2 months before we got married--I'm a journalist. I got my name officially changed in April? I think. I'm used to signing my name now, and i have to tell people my name a lot with my job, so--I am used to it. It's been 5 months. :-) oh, and my new name is 2x as long as my old one. My new name is 26 characters total! I go by my first, maiden and new last name professionally--first, middle, new last name in everything else.
no time at all!
I'd been practicing writing / doodling my name though forever. It sounds awesome. I do that anyway normally though. My work notebooks are horrible! Melissa Maiden Begins over and over, yeesh.
I'm not married yet but I'm pretty sure that it won't take long since my last name is like going from "Bee" to "Beach". I pretty much just have to add -ch to the end!
It's been eight months and it's still a challenge. This is probably harder since I kept my name professionally, and I sign my name a TON at work. Outside of work, I am MyFirst MyMaiden HisLAst, so as long as people don't forget to say my middle, I remember, but so hard!
I had finally made the shift (never accidentally signing my maiden name etc.) about 6 months in. But my mom sent me a birthday check made out to the old name and I've been signing my maiden name for the last three weeks!
It is definitely strange! I've been at a new job going by my new name for 6 weeks, and I still do a double take looking for my name on the computer. I'm slowly beginning to recognize it sooner now. I just need to finish changing my name on my credit cards because now I can't remember which way to sign my name with which card!
Thanks, everyone, for helping me not feel so alone. Based on everyone's comments, I guess it will take me awhile to get used to my new name. That's pretty much what I thought. BTW, @Adira and @Moose1209, my new last name has a "v" in it, too!
It's been 2 months and still not used to it. I keep glancing at my mail thinking "Who is this for?" and then realizing it's mine.
I just got all my cards/ID's changed over this week, so for the past 2 days I've been using them. Seeing a wallet full of cards with a different name on them makes me feel like I stole someone's wallet!!

....to get used to your new name?
I finalized my name change last week, and I'm so happy I took my husband's last name. I moved my maiden to the middle.
Now, it seems so awkward anytime anyone calls me my new name. Even more awkward to see it in print. And let's not even talk about how awkward it is to sign my new name. I feel like a 3rd grader who is just learning cursive.
How long did it take for you to get used to your new name?
