I got my name changed with Social Security pretty much right away. I went in person and it was instant but it took a week or two to get my actual card. It took me a few months to go to the DMV though and get that changed.
In total time about a month, however due to the state of MN shut down about a 2 weeks after I went did my DL that is why it took so long.
I would say month for the DL
It was only a week to get a new SS card.
Took about a week and half to get new bank cards.
Not long at all. My credit cards took about two weeks to come (and everything could be done over the phone except my AmEx which needed a form sent in), my SS card took about 2 weeks (and took about 35 minutes at the office), my DL took about a half hour at an expedited/license only office and about 10 days to come. I still haven't done a new passport!
I think you have to go in person to the SSA. I waited about an hour to change my name and they gave me a sheet of paper that would have been sufficient to get a new drivers license the same day. I didn't feel like waiting in line any more that day so I waited until I got my new social security card in the mail (came within one week). Then another 1hr wait at the DMV and $11 for a new license. I haven't done my passport yet because I have to send in an updated picture but that should take a few weeks.
Can you get a new license before you get the new SS card? Or do you have to wait? I know on the site for the state I'm living in, it said it is "best to change name on SS first". ... so not sure if I can at least get that going before actually receiving the card. I'll ask when I go into the SS place but am curious now!
I got a copy of our marriage certificate in the mail 8 days after our wedding. The next day I went to the SSA in person, and they gave me a confirmation receipt thing to take to the DMV (which I didn't need). I received my new SS card in the mail within a week.
I brought the copy of my marriage certificate to the DMV, and that and my old license was all they needed to issue a new one in my married name. So I guess including the wait time for the certificate and getting the SS card in the mail, it was completely done in about two weeks, but I had the new license in hand that day.
it may take me years;) first of all i have plane tickets for business trip all the way up unitl december of this year, my passport doesnt expire for another four years, and my drivers licence next year. but i will answer to mrs c. when called for a table at a resteraunt
@yassim: I got my new DL before my new social. I did that first, just so happen that I got both on the same day in the mail.
So I don't think it really matters. On the SS website it tells you what to bring and the form to fill out
Wow...I am a delinquent! I have all the paperwork, but it is more than two months later and I have yet to do it. :(
I changed mine pretty much right away. I went to the SSA first. My new SS card came in the mail about 10 days later. The next day I went to the DMV, and I'm just waiting on my new license to come in. It should be in any day now. After that comes in I'll just need to alert my bank and my payroll company. The whole process was waaaaay easier than I expected.
Wait, other states don't print out a new license at the DMV while you're there? I never expected NJ to be ahead of the curve on something.
I did the SS, DL and main bank acct within a month after getting the Marriage Certificate in the mail. And like the PP, my time scale was the same for going to the office, waiting in line and waiting for the paper work in the mail.
I only changed my Passport because it had expired and we were planning an international trip about 6 months after we got married.
But we are at 10 months and I still have a few credit cards and airline/rental car affinity program cards in my maiden name.
@Sassygrn: where did you go to get your SS changed? We are debating between St Paul and Minneapolis. Im thinking St Paul would be faster :)
@MissTatas: If you live in Hennipen county you are supposed to go to Mpls.. least that is how I read it. If you do, do Mpls get there before the SS office opens. I got there about 5 min before and there was a line, however I was in and out of the office with in 15 minutes. I had filled out the paper work before had from the SS website.
@Sassygrn: He lived in st paul, I lived in minneapolis, we bought a house together in Washington County. LOL. I suppose I can stop playing on WB and do some research :)
@MissTatas: LOL, I think you have to go to Mpls. I read somewhere that all 7 counties in the metro area are supposed to go to Mpls. I can't remember where I saw it but it was online
Found it:

@Sassygrn: Suck. I hate MPLS (and I lived there for 25 yrs lol. Downtown just freaks me out). Thank you so very very very much for doing all of the work for me haha.
Sorry for threadjacking :)
@yassim: It took me one morning (yes morning as in less than a day). I went to SSA and they gave me proof of my changed name on paper (which everyone accepts). That took about 30 minutes. I then drove to the DMV and got my new license (paper issued for the time being), and that took another 30 minutes. I then went to my bank and changed my name (name change was immediate). The following week on the SAME day, everything was sent to me in the mail. Permanent Social Security card, permanent Driver's License, and new Bank Card.
Rest assured, you can get these things done in a matter of minutes if you're prepared. I brought my marriage ceritifcate, old social security card, old driver's license, a bill mailed to my house (proof of residency), and passport all in a manila envelope. That way I was prepared to give them anything they needed to speed up the process. The SSA only looked at my old Driver's License & Marriage Certificate, and the DMV only looked at my new Social Security paper and took my old Driver's License.
I did my SS first (someone told me I had to). Then I did the DMV and everything except my passport. I did the passport after our honeymoon because I was worried about getting a new passport back in time for our trip (we did the honeymoon about 2 months after the wedding).
SS took a week or 2 to get in, DL I did in one day. Credit cards were also really fast. I had to go to the bank with the marriage certificate to do the checking account. I think I ordered 5 copies of the marriage certificate so I wouldn't have to worry about getting my one copy back before moving on to the next step.
I got my name changed with SSA about two months after and have an appointment the 2nd to get my DL changed. My work wont let me go by my new name until I get my license so I haven't gotten to use my new name yet :(
PA requires a triple seal marriage cert before you can go to the SS office, DMV etc, and to get it you have to send in a pamphlet and $10.00 money order. I just sent mine in this past Wednesday. The courthouse advised it may take as many as 3 months to get everything changed over. Seems like such a process...
This might be only Allegheny County, not the entire state of PA...
I got my SS changed really quickly once I got the marriage cert back from our officiant. I changed my license the next week, and we added me onto DH's bank account then, so it wasn't hard.
I didn't find the major things difficult to do, but I'm still changing over stuff 6 months later!! I personally find the name change process a PITA. I wish there was 1 place you went and they notified everyone for you!
I really need to get on this because we have been married for almost 2 years. Talk about procrastination :-)
Here's the order and how I did things...
1. Picked up marriage certificate
2. Went to DMV and got a new license (printed there)
3. Went in person to Social Security... a new card came about a week later
4. Changed bank accounts
5. Changed work information (payroll, pension, insurance) Waiting on new insurance cards still
6. Mailed off passport information... will get new passport in about 6 weeks
7. Changed utilities and credit cards
8. Alerted homeowners insurance (have to do this first... not bothering to go through the title company on the deed... no need) They mailed a declaration with my new name on it.
9. Mailed homeowners declaration to the mortgage company
The whole process took about a week and with lots of waiting at social security and DMV along with paperwork. Buying a house before marriage definately added more people to notify!
I didn't go into the SS office until four or five months after the wedding. With work/class schedules, it was hard to get in before the 4pm closing time of the SS office. After that, I received it the ss card in the mail two weeks later. I took the next few weeks changing my cc’s and bills. It took me 11 months of being married to change my driver’s license LOL. And my passport and perm res card are still in my maiden name. LAZY lol
I got my SS card back within about 5 days, only had to wait about half an hour at the SS office.
I still haven't gotten a chance to do my driver's license or passport.
Then I'll have to do banks and insurance and such.
Um, I've been married for over a year and even though I use my married name socially, I still haven't legally changed it because I am too lazy to do everything that all of you did in like 15 minutes. I fail.
3 months later I'm still in the process. Immediately after the wedding, I started updating both of our work info since I was being added to his policies. In August, I finally got several certified copies of our marriage license, so I updated my DL @ the DMV. In Sept, I'm working on updating all of our banking info which has taken longer than I expected. In Oct, I hope to finally get to SS.
I just wish they had a one stop shop instead of having to run all over to do something so simple.
I am still working on it! I did all of the big changes (CC, driver's license, work info, SS Card, etc.) right away. Now I am just working on my utilities. It's not easy becoming another person. :)
after we got a copy of our marriage certificate, it took about 2 weeks to complete the process. It really wasn't bad at all.
Went to SS in person, it changed in their system after 24 hours, but got my card within a week.
Took the card to the RMV for a new license, and that came within 2 weeks.
Then the process of changing the bank, credit cards, bills, etc took probably a month. So I'd say about 2 months total!
I had everything done in a month. It took less than 2 weeks to get the license back from the court house. I could have theoretically gotten my SSC, DL and passport all at least started in a day. I went to the SSC branch in town and that process took about 20 minutes, and they issued me a change of name letter to serve until I got my new card (about a week), with that letter and the certificate I could get a new license (after I had changed to instate which was another fiasco) and it took me two weeks to get the real license in the mail (Texas doesn't print them on site, which I think is weird).
A month and a week after the wedding we have everything- including CC changed and what not.
I had everything done in a few weeks. I went to the SS office and changed my last name. I received the card within a week, and instantly went to change my name with the DMV. I got my drivers license the same day, and went to change my name on my bank accounts. I faxed my marriage certificate to my credit ard companies and changed my name with them. I called my bill companies & they didn't require a marriage certificate. Pretty easy! I was expecting it to be a big headache!
I am still waiting for my marriage certificate to arrive in the mail! Until then, just sitting tight. Although one of the admins at work immediately changed my office name tag to my new name :)

Sorry, there are no users yet.
I called SSA and the automated thing on the phone said it could take weeks to get a response.
But I called a branch and they said it would be faster in person. But how fast, exactly? I took that as maybe instant, but now I'm not sure!
Then you have to get a new license... all in all, how long did it take you to do from start of the process to finish, until you had your SSN name changed and new license?
