I've had this conversation with a couple of friends of mine, and everyone had a different answer.  I've learned that it depends on the designer, and to some extent, the store.

I'm curious--how long did it take for your dress to come in, and who designed it?

I ordered my dress from David's Bridal in July. They said it would take until Mid-October to get here, but it took less than a month!

Mine is from David's and was supposed to take 3 months to come in. When I got the email it had arrived (early-like in less than 1 month) the size was wrong. I had ordered it in petite and the one that had come in was a regular. Getting it fixed wasn't too big of a deal since all their paperwork did infact say petite...the consultant who did the order was not the one whom I worked with and she messed it up entering it into the computer. I think it was about another month till the right one arrived.

All in all it was less than the 3 months they said it would take even with them having to reorder the dress.

I was told it's a custom creation from the designer. I ordered it in July and it should be arriving in December or January.

My dress was a Maggie Sottero and it took almost 4 months exactly to come in.  I ordered mid November and it came in mid March.

I was told my Maggie would take 8-10 months but it came exactly 3 months after I ordered it.  Go figure.

my private label by g gown was supposed to be in within 4-6 months.  2 months after ordering i was told it would be in at 6 months. and then it ended up being a month late. so 7 months for me.

The shop I've been using in NYC said they can get anything within 4 months and to allow 2 months for alterations.  I haven't ordered anything yet and as of Jan 3rd, I'll be at exactly 6 months so I *hope* they really mean it!!

Mine is Casablanca. The store told me it would take ~7 months to come in.  That seems awfully long.  I feel like maybe they just use all the time allowed before your wedding, because they know my wedding date isn't for 3 months after that.  I wonder if I said I was getting married six months from now if they'd magically be able to have my dress before then?

i'm curious about this too! i tried on dresses at one place and they told me 8-10 months for a maggie, because they are so popular. i felt so nervous because my wedding is 8 months away now! i couldn't believe when the saleswoman said that girls are going in more than a year before their wedding buying dresses! i ended up buying a cosmobella (from dimitrios) from another salon, they said it should take 6 months max. it made me feel so much better! haha.

I just got mine today from Jessica McClintock! I ordered it the beginning of this month.  Was not expecting it until end of Janurary.

I truly believe it's a scare tactic telling people "you're running out time, takes 8-10 months, order quickly!" in order to put pressure on the customer and make a sale. I bet if you went to the same store and told your wedding was in 4 months and you want to buy one of their dresses, they'd magically make it happen. Of course sometimes that magic comes in the form of a "rush fee" which I also think is bogus.

I asked the store where I bought mine if a rush fee will be necessary and the salesgirl told me "no, we'll just charge you a $150 rush alterations fee on top of the standard $500 when it arrives". LOL, thanks for telling me, now I'll be sure to take my dress somewhere else for alterations.

Mine took a long time to come in. I found it in March of 2009. We ordered it then. My wedding isn't til Nov 2010. My order was placed in late spring, and my dress will be in July 2010 for fittings.
