I let my passport expire a few months ago, stupid I know. Now Fiance & I are looking to go abroad in 5 weeks. I don’t remember my first passport taking 4-6 weeks like they say. I’m wondering if I should risk it and send it in like normal and save the $60, or just pay the $60 expedited fee and have it gauranteed in time? How long did your passport take?

@nickels: Im currently waiting for my passport to arrive for a VK in May, however, the friends that we are going with received theirs in 2 weeks (they applied 4 weeks ago with routine service)!! I applied 1.5 weeks ago…
I checked on the US Passport website, and it currently states that routine service is 4-6 weeks (which has not changed in a few months!). It will definitely be a gamble to do routine service, but I think you will be OK!

I wouldn’t take the risk for $60. I had to get a new passport since I changed my last name, it arrived in about 4 weeks? But they misspelled my name!! So now it’s got to go back and I have to wait another 4 weeks. The good news is I started this whole process 3 months before our vacation so we have time.

@OUgal0004: That’s good to know. I even kept my parent’s address listed as mine so there wouldn’t be any changes, and no name change since Fiance & I aren’t married yet, so I’m hoping it will pass right through. I think I may take the gamble…

The last time I renewed my passport was back in 2008, but I remember getting it very quickly, I think it took about a week. I did pick it up myself though, at the Chicago passport agency. I’m sure it would have taken longer if i’d had it sent to me.
I would guess that you’ll recieve your passport before your trip abroad, even if you don’t pay the expidited fee. If you’re stressing out about it though, then I’d go ahead and pay that extrea $60 anyway – just for peace of mind.

I mailed in my passport to be renewed about three weeks ago and I have not yet gotten my new one. If I were you, I would pass the rush fee so I didn’t have to worry about it.

I renewed mine back in 2008 and it took exactly 2 weeks. I didn’t pay for any rush ordering or anything either.

I had mine rush shipped so I did have to pay more, but I think it took about 2 weeks.

I’m currently waiting but it’s only been a few weeks. They told us 6-8 weeks.

If it’s the difference between a trip that costs thousands of dollars getting canceled or not, shell out the extra $60.
I got mine in about 3 weeks, but you just never know. Better safe than sorry.

Mine took 5-6 weeks in 2008. Last year it took FI’s about 4 weeks.

I just got mine renewed last month. It only took about 2.5 weeks.

I had the same dilemma last spring. I took a chance and got mine in 3 weeks, but my Fiance applied for his just a few weeks after mine and it took his closer to 2 months to get here. I would just pay the fee and be safe.
