Hi everyone, I know this post has been done quite a bit, but I guess I’m looking for replies directly from people who have experienced this!
My boyfriend and I went to get my ring size at the end of March and he orded my center gemstone early April (because it was suddenly unavailable). These are the detail I know. For speculations, I’m assuming he didn’t contact a custom maker until June, because we bought a house in May and had to deal with that… he’s not one to multitask, especially on large things like these. Mid-June, his mother was introducing me to people as his fiance at his younger sister’s high school graduation – from this I assume he’s talked to her about having the ring delivered to her house (because he does that quite a bit anywayas). We are now 8 weeks from that grad party, and I’m getting antsy. He hasn’t been to his mother’s house without me in awhile, so I really don’t think he has it yet. Most things I read have said 6-8 weeks, but my best friend who just got engaged said her fiance had her ring completely custom-made and it took 12 weeks with a rush on it from California (shipped to Florida).
I’m not positive how custom-made mine is… but I did give him a pretty detailed design (antique, yet nature-inspired – specific gemstone (already ordered), and if encrusted, white sapphires – NO diamonds!) I know I’ve given him custom ring makers websites in the past (about a year/year and a half ago), but we also talked to people at Zales when we went to get my ring size.
Any input? How long did it take to custom make your ring from start to arrival? How custom-made was it?
Thank you 🙂

Took about 2 months, I think for mine.

My husband slightly modified a ring design the jeweler already had (remove some stones from the band, very simple ring), and from placing the order to having it in his hands took 2 weeks.

It depends if they have to cast a mold or build the setting from scratch. That can definitely take some time. If you’re just modifying an existing style, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

- Wedding: October 2014 - Cape May
I had a plain band made with out stones and it took 4 weeks. For an eternity band I was quoted 8 weeks. It takes time to get stones that will match as well as having to redo any thing along the line.

the designing process took about 2 months and making of the ring about 1 month for us.

Oh man, quite a range! Thank you all. I’ve been pretty antsy since it’s been about 4.5 months since we got the ring size… But since my best friend said it took 12 weeks for her fiance to get her ring, I’ll try to be patient for another month. I just can’t help but think about it… we’ve been talking about getting married and what our wedding will be like since we met! Not to mention he always says, “we’re pratically engaged already” about once a week. We’ve already discussed where we’re getting married too.. just have to nail down the when, but that won’t happen until I get the ring on my finger.
Aahhhhh… it’s distracting!

I completely designed mine from the ground up, both wedding band and engagement ring (Engagement ring after the fact, it’s a long story) and it took a month from the moment I gave the jeweler my paperwork until my diamond was reset and on my hand.

I’ve been working on the design of my ring for 10 months. I’m a perfectionist, so I am not willing to rush into a design that I’m wishy-washy about.

ddhb2007: wow! My SO asked me what kind of ring I wanted when we met so he could make it a surprise, and then was disappointed when he realized the only way to get my ring size was me knowing he wanted it. I gave him an idea of what I wanted, but I’m anxious to see how it turns out! However, this process comes with a lot of dreams about ugly rings ending up on my finger 😉 (no ring I’ve dreamed about has fit my description in the least, though. Lol)

damarajade: Mine took about 4 weeks after the initial emails etc with what I wanted. It was a custom replica so I dropped my ring in, cast was ready after 2 weeks, took another 1.5 weeks for them to set the diamonds (lots of melee and pave which takes time). If we were designing from scratch it would probably have taken maybe 6-8 weeks.

I think it was about 3 weeks total (12 business days for manufacturing plus shipping time).

*bump* Anyone else want to share their experience?

Mine took 8 weeks, but that took into account the 2 weeks my jeweler was away on vacation. Normally he says 6weeks. I actually think it could have been shorter b/c FI paid in full up-front, but we were cool with the 6 weeks

I have had three done. My solitaire engagement ring was about 1.5 months, it was done from a cast though so easy. I had two eternity bands done as well. One took like 4 months and one took 1 month. It just depended on how intricate the band was and availability of stones (I was super picky). Do you know he will propose as soon as he gets the ring?
