Second, since you had such a long break in between. My FH and I did the same thing, and I only count the years we’ve been together nonstop.

12  1/2 years. We called off our engagement in ’10  and I moved out with our DD, but we continued dating.

@cherriesandcream:  Once we hit the “more on than off” stage, I would sometimes say “Off and on for X years” to people, but that gets complicated because people often have like 3 more questions to ask. If you just say, “3 years”, people nod and move on.

@cherriesandcream:  I would say count from the 2nd time you started dating given the long break, especially in relation to how long you had been dating before breaking up (a few months). Guess he wants to be able to say 4-4 1/2 years!

Interesting post!  I would say for simplicities’ sake (like, if anyone asks how long you all have been together) I would say 3 years. If the conversation gets more in depth you can always clarify and say something like “Well, we actually dated for a few months, then took a year apart, prior to our 3 year relationship”. BTW, congratulations on 3 years!  It’s a nice time in your relationship … Still new and exciting, yet established!!

@cherriesandcream:  When we were ‘dating’ after the engagement was called off, he didn’t want to classify us as anything (he saw it as a fresh start, and didn’t want us to fall back into the routine of just being ‘comfortable’ together), but after we (DD and I) moved back in, he said he was stupid for thinking that way… for even having the engagement called off. I think he just needed to realize what he had.

I voted the second because of the long break.
