How long will your dj/band be playing at your reception?

I am in the middle of creating my schedule and I feel like 1-1/2 is not very long but I looked at some sample timeline and it seems the norm is around 1-1/2 hours?

Hmmm... I band/dj starts durning cocktail hour and plays until the end, so about 3 hours. Is that not normal?

Ours (DJ) will be playing from 6-10 (an hour through dinner, which I'll probably just give him a playlist for) and three hours for the reception.

Our ceremony musicians played through the cocktail hour and then the band took over.  They played from 6:30 - 10:00 with two 15 minute breaks.

Hah. And here I always thought that since weddings last until 2:00 in the morning, the band/DJ must be playing for WAY longer than an hour and a half!

    But I'm iPod-ing, so what do I know? =)

Our reception started at 6:30.  We had our DJ be the "emcee", playing music for our introductions and then introducing our speeches.  He played music through the dinner hour and then we had dancing from 8:15-11:30.

Do most people play music throughout dinner.  We were thinking just cocktail hour and after dinner.  Is that reasonable?

yah that was what i was kinda thinking too because throughout the reception, there will be speeches, etc. I was only planning on having the music during cocktail reception and then wedding party annoucement, first song and open dancing after all the speeches, etc were out of the way

Our DJ is playing from cocktail hour, through dinner and dancing.  (She won't play during the speeches.)  So she'll be there for 4.5 hours I think.  But that's about 2 hours for dancing & partying at the end.

We are starting the reception at 8:00 pm.  However, there will be no music for the first hour, as we are having people get food and drinks, then watch a video of the ceremony.  (The ceremony itself is midweek and in a different state, so most people at the reception will not get to be there.)  The musician will come on at 9:00, and play until midnight with two 15-minute breaks.
