I think you have plenty of time for all the elements of the reception that you’d like to include but maybe consider how much ‘party/everyone dancing’ time you want.  You might be able to double up like doing the cake cutting as dinner winds down or tossing the bouquet as dessert winds down instead of doing everything separately.

We’re planning on the cocktail hour starting at 5 pm and we’d like the reception to go as late as possible like 1 am/2 am depending on the crowd.  Although I may be curled up asleep in the corner by then….  :o)

Ours is going to be ~4 hours. We are doing a sunset ceremony, followed by heavy hor d’oevres, desserts, drinks and dancing! We think our “alternative format” will give us the most mingling/dancing time.

We want to have our reception go till 1. But I am not sure if we should start our ceremony at 7 or 8. Any advice?

I think the average is 4-5hours but many go longer. 4 hours is plenty of enough time to get thru everything. Just have a plan of when you want it all to happen so nothing gets missed.
