My sister had her 2nd baby last week, and I believe that she lost her plug about 4 days before my niece arrived.
Congrats on becoming an Auntie it is the best!
Well, I knew that I was in labor because I lost mine, but that may not be the way it was for everyone. However, my labor and delivery went pretty quick as I delivered less than a day later.
It's in most cases within 24hours or so. But, that's not at all the same for everyone just what I've experienced. She would need to watch for leaking of fluids or actually having her water break of course and the contractions. But, it should be really soon!!! So congrats in advance!!
Usually it means labor will start within the next few days. Although, some woman can lose it around 37 or so weeks and still make it to 40. Either way though, its a sign the things are for surely moving along!!! Keep your phone near! =D
I lost mine the day I went into labor, but I didn't know that's what it was. It was about... 5 or so hours before my water broke and I knew for sure I was in labor.

I started losing mine during one of my nighttime bathroom trips... probably around 2AM? By the next bathroom trip at 5AM I had very light contractions. I also had 'loose' stools. These 3 things together had me thinking 'Today's the day'. Warren was born at 8:30PM so about 18 or so hours :)
I didn't even know when I lost mine! I thought it was still there until my water broke.
Oh my gosh...this is all sooner than I thought! I guessed it meant about a week! Holy crap...I better turn the volume up on my phone!

AHhhh! Congratulations Auntie!!!! They say that the baby WILL be born with in 24 hours of the water breaking! Update us on the the good stuff!!! =D
I lost my mucus plug around midnight on Wed. Had to have pitocin started at 8pm on Thursday night. Delivered on Friday morning.
It was about a week and a half for my cousin before labor started for her after she lost her mucus plug. I keep hoping any day now I will lose mine and labor can begin (12 days until my EDD) soon!

I lost mine at the OBs, lol, then my water broke a few minutes later before they even had a chance to check me. I had the kiddo about 5 hours later. ;)
@heathaah: I lost my Mucus plug at 3 am and had her exactly 24 hours later at 250 am :)

I didn't lose mine until well after the contractions had started (and were under 3minutes apart--after about 14hrs) my water was broke by the docs (induced) 6 hours later because they were getting worried.
I think it is different for every pregnancy.
