FI and I knew each other for 12 years (met in middle school) and dated off and on for 6 years before getting engaged. Its a little deceiving though, because although we had been together for a long time, most of it was long distance (as in, a plane flight - not a drive away) and we only lived in the same place for 5 months before he popped the question.
How long did you date before getting engaged?
we dated for a little over a year before getting engaged, but had known each other for two years/had been friends first!

My fiance and I were together for just shy of 4 years before we got engaged. By the time we get married, we'll have been together for 6 years and 10 days!
A little over 3 years for us and we got married just shy of being together 4 years.
10 years! we are high school sweethearts so that timeframe was fine with me..we wanted to get through college/grad school and get our careers in order :)
Dated over 5 years. He gave me a ring the day I graduated from law school, so the time period doesn't phase me in the least.

Thursday will be seven months for us. Six of those have been long distance. He's proposing sometime in the next three weeks (my money is on Valentines, haha), and then we've got another 4 months of distance to deal with.

We dated for about 8 months before we got engaged. We were already living together so we knew we wanted to get married!
Dated 3 years when we got engaged. Lived together for 1.5 years of that. But we've known each other for 16.5 years.

Right before our 5th year anniversay =) seems to be the right time haha!
8 months! We don't live with each other yet. We did but then I moved out to live with my parents almost immediately after we got engaged. Funny ha.

We were together for almost exactly five years when we got engaged! We will be together seven years when we get married next October. I think it's the perfect amount of time! Not too short, not too long!

2 years and 4 months before engagement. However, we'd known each other for 11.5 years! We had dated in high school, went separate ways for college, and got back together after that. He told me after two months that he wanted to marry me, but it took a while to get the ring. We moved in together after about 1 year and 10 months.
3 Months haha. We move pretty fast :P We'd been best friends before we started dating, so there was no question about our decision to get married.
Well, we dated for 6 months then bought a house. Kind of unconvential, I know but it worked for us! We love our house! Then we got engaged at 11.5 months.

I selected 3-5 years because although I knew the ring was coming since just before the 3 year mark (there was an elaborate scheme to get mom out of the way for him to ask my dad while they were visiting) it was another month before he was on his knee with the ring. I had insisted it was not official until these two things were achieved, but for a month he kept trying to touch me with his knee so he could say we were engaged.
so far we've been dating for almost two years, and i'm pretty sure an engagement will come this year, because we want to get married dec 2011 and i told him i need at LEAST a year to plan and not be insane.
