DH and I are house hunting and have started watching all the House Hunting shows. We saw one couple who spent 5 years house hunting and looked at 500+ homes. So I was wondering, how many houses and how long did it take you to find your house?

@stephanie63087: I think I'd give up by 500 too! I actually loved the 6th house we looked at but when we went to look at it again they already had a very solid          offer :( I think we're in the low teens right now, in terms of how many we've looked at.

We looked a lot online before we went to the houses, and then we just drove by to narrow our search down more. That way we didn't have to waste our time going in if the backyard was too small for us or something like that. We ended up finding one house that we loved, looked at it, and put in an offer. It's short sale, so we're still waiting and hoping.

We probably looked at about 15. Our real estate agent took us out 3 times and showed us about 5 houses each time. Then we went out one last time to look at our top 3 favorites and we chose from those.

5 years and 500 houses?! I think those people may need to just have a custom house built!

    @Treasure43:

House Hunters? I'm addicted to that show!

I think I remember that episode! That's crazy. I wouldn't wait that long.

We easily looked at 100+ houses over the course of a year... we put an offer in on one that we both liked, but it was rejected and we had to start from scratch - it worked out in our favor because our house now is so much better and a better fit for us too.

We looked at a minimum of a couple 100 online (my mother has MLS access). Between open houses and planned visits we saw close to about 80 houses. We got the 5th house we bid on. We offered asking price or more but in our area anything that was decent flew right off the market. Just to give you a timeframe, we put our first bid in November and we ended up getting our bid accepted for the house we currently own in February (we closed in April).

OG and I looked at about 30 homes, most of them on our own when we found out about open houses on weekends.  I think I'd be a little nutty if I looked at 500 homes!  Although, I do I enjoy my share of house hunting shows :)

I saw 15-20 in person plus hundreds online.

I love House Hunters!  I swear the House Hunters narrator has the best job!

We only had 2 days to look (we were moving to the area from another state with the military)- I looked online for hours and hours. Our real estate agents picked the best properties to show us- we saw about 10 before deciding on our current place.

Since its our first house we were really open to a lot of houses, and only had a few "must haves". I think our 2nd home will take a bit longer to find as we'll hopefully have a larger budget and can be a little more picky.

That being said, we looked at over 100 houses online (our realtor gave us MLS access), and drove by about 10. We went to see 5 houses in 1 day and found our house that day.

We looked at 15-20 houses. It happened really quickly...3 weeks of looking and we were under contract. We lost two other houses because other people beat us to putting in a bid so we moved really fast on our house. Funny thing is that our house was our 3rd choice, but has ended up being a great house and the right one for us!

I looked at probably 75 houses in a 6 month period before I purchased the house that I have now.

    Sometimes it just takes time.

We looked at probably 8-10 houses in person, but HUNDREDS online. We only looked for about a month, but it felt like so.much.longer than that. House selling/buying is exhausting.

Ours was really fast but I think that was a factor of 1) being on a deadline (homebuyers credit), 2) having a reasonable expectation of what we wanted and what we could expect to pay, 3) generally agreeing on everything we wanted in a house, and 4) living in an area that is not really hard to find good houses in.

From the day that we stepped into the first house we looked at until the day that we signed a sales contract, it was exactly 3 weeks. We did probably look at hundreds of homes online and we went to see maybe 10 of them in person. We also had a realtor helping us.

Basically the house we found had everything on our "had to have" list and all but two things (fence and hardwood floors) on our "would love to have" list-- including great vaulted ceilings, an awesome jacuzzi tub/master bath, and way more space than we'll ever need. For less than we thought we'd have to spend. We saw a good thing fast so we jumped on it.

We definitely looked at hundreds online, drove by at least 30, and actually walked through probably 10.  It was exhausting!  But, from the time we decided to buy a house  to closing was 3 weeks.  I nearly lost my mind and do NOT recommend it.

I feel like we looked at a million houses!  In the 4 months we spent house hunting, I'd say we actually went to at least 50-75 but we spent hours each day looking at houses online.  I also got a new job in the course of our home search, which raised our price range and allowed us to start looking in different areas that we couldn't afford before.

Good luck with your house hunt!

I hadn't thought about the online aspect. We've looked at tons of houses online! It's so interesting how everyone's experience is so varied! It just goes to show you that it really is different for everyone :)

we looked about a year and a half. it was our first time leaving our parents homes so we weren't in any rush, and we really wanted to make sure we got it right. not to mention there were a lot of unaccepted offers and investors who bought out from under our bids along the way. i eventually got fed up of looking and sent SO to do it as the mortgage would be in his name/his paycheck, and he found us a wonderful townhouse that we absolutely love and so do our family and friends :)

We had a time crunch (FI starting a new job in that area, FI's brother starting school, home buyer's tax credit) so it took us about a month. We were looking at houses in a different town, it was like 3 weekends of looking...probably between 15-20 houses. It would have been less because we put an offer that was accepted on the 4th house that we looked at but, due to problems with the underwriter, it feel through and we had to start over.

I also think it would've taken us longer if we planned to be in this house long term. When we were looking it was for a house that we could be in for 5 years or less just because we needed to be in that area and it made more sense than commuting long distance. We plan on moving into a more "permanent" house once we start having kids and I think we'll be a lot more selective with that one and it will probably take longer.

Love House Hunters!! FI and I are addicted!

We looked at about 40 places, put offers in on 3, and then 4th time was the charm for us.  Which actually turned out to be an absolute blessing, as it was, hands down, the best place in the best location.

And ugh, I love House Hunters!  Although my fiance made me stop watching when we were househunting because I kept getting SO pissed off that these people looked at 3 houses, put in an offer, and were done with it.....because I was jealous hahah.

We probably looked at 10 or so houses before we found the one we could see ourselves living in.
