3 for us, crate and barrel, dillards, and of course, bed bath and beyond
We registered at 2: Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond. They had everything we needed, at great prices, so I didn't feel like I needed to go anywhere else.
Two - Amazon.com and Bed, Bath, & Beyond. Whatever BB&B didn't have, Amazon did; heck, Amazon probably even has the stuff I registered for at BB&B, but a lot of my relatives don't "do" computers, so they needed an in-store option.
Amazon's "Universal Registry" feature also made it nice for me to add a few things from other websites (like etsy) that I liked, but couldn't/didn't want to make a registry for specifically.
