I like diversifying my banking so I can have access to money (even if it’s just credit for a short time) in case an account is frozen or something.
How many different banks do you use?
This is more about having access to money, so I’m not including investments, mortgages etc. in the poll but feel free to comment about those too!

I have my checking account at one bank and my savings at another.

I have 2 personal accounts, checking and saving. And then 2 joint accounts, checking and saving…and 2 credit cards

Lord, too many. I have my personal accounts at one bank, he has his personal account and all our joint stuff at another bank. Credit card wise – I’ve got one of each of the 4 major brands (Visa, MC, Amex, Discover) and he has a mastercard.

We use several differnent banks.
1 for our joint checking & savings (Bank of America)
3 for credit cards (Bank of America, Capital One, OEFCU)
2 for our auto loan, student loans & Mortgage (Wells Fargo, Chase)
1 for our retirement account (Diversified)
For a total of 6 financial institutions for everything.

Way too many… I use a total of six banks for checking or credit cards. Seven if you count CDs as savings. I’ve moved around alot in the last few years and have done a lousy job at not leaving a banking trail to follow me.

Dh and I had chequing/savings at separate banks before we merged money. We each kept a savings acct at our own banks and opened a joint chequing and savings at a credit union.

Why would your account get frozen? I guess this is just not something I worry about at all. All of our money (checking and savings) is in one bank.

Just one for checking now. I used to have 3, for the in case, but never used it and it just got annoying keeping track of all the accounts. I still have 2 (or 3… crap theres that losing track problem) for savings, had a 4th one but closed that since it was tied to one of the checking accounts. Then I have 4 or 5 credit cards, but only really use 3 of them. 3 retirement accounts with 2 different institutions, and 3 investment accounts with 2 different institutions. Spreadsheets are my best friend.

I currently use 3 different banks.

@CorgiTales: I haven’t had my account frozen but I have had spending limits placed on my account. Some place I’d charged my card reported a bunch of information lost so the bank did it as a preventative measure.
Checking is at 1 bank but I have two debit cards (1 mine, 1 joint). Savings is at 2 banks. Credit cards… for everday use 2. I don’t really consider my best buy card useful in an emergency haha.

Checking at one and savings at another.

I technically have two for checking but only use one. The second one was because I had my car loan through a credit union and you had to have an account there to get the loan.
We have 1 bank for savings.
I have 3+ for credit cards because I like having the different CC options (Visa, MC, Amex…) and you can’t do that through one bank.

Oh, I guess I responded wrong.
We’ll have two for checking and two for savings (the same two, haha). I have my auto loan through another, and two more for credit cards (3 at one, 1 at another), so 5 total. I didn’t include my car or credit cards in my poll answer though, so I said 2.
