We are doing a cookie bar as a favor. We will have cake and our reception package also includes a fruit display with chocolate to dip into. So..... how many cookies should we do per person. We will probably have 6-8 different types (the exact details are still being worked out). What are your thoughts?

You need one per person for edibles. However since you are having a cookie buffet, I would definitely have too much than not enough. Plus you can't really have any signage that says "limit 2 cookies per person" especially if you are having a variety. If you want to limit the number, then package them per person which does not allow them any choice in the flavor. If you let them choose their own cookies, then you need alot extra to make sure you don't run out.

Also keep in mind that not everyone likes cake or chocolate and some people will gravitate toward the cookies instead.

I would estimate 3 per person because they will probably try to "stock up" on their way out. I think that's a safe estimate, especially with the other desserts you're offering. While some people may not like the cake/chocolate fountain, others may not like cookies.

And then if you run out, you run out!

Our candy buffet was gone before our reception even started (people starting to dig in during cocktail hour), and we ordered a TON of candy. Like, way more than necessary.

So yeah, three per person should do it without having too many leftovers, or risking not enough.

I agree with Ember78 - you definitely need to err on the side of having way too many than risk not having enough.  It's going to look really bad if you start running out of cookies.

The initial number that is popping into my head is to have at least as many of each type of cookie as you have guests.  So if you have for example 100 guests, probably 125 cookies of each variety.  I know that seems like a lot but thats kind of what you have to do if you have some sort of buffet - you need to try to ensure you don't run out of anything!

I did order small chinese takeout boxes which will probably fit 3 to 4 cookies although if they just take some of the small ones then they can fit more.

@Miss Chapstick: I'm going to tell the site coordinator to hold off on putting out the cookies until later so that they all don't disappear too soon!

Hmm....I'd say 3 per person, just be on the safe side.
