My sister uses prefolds/covers so I'm familiar with her stash.
She keeps about 5-6 covers on hand. She uses thirsties and they have been her favorite. She doesn't like bummis at all, she said the fit is weird.
It sounds like between the 16 pockets and the stash of fitteds you should be set! It will be nice for you to have two systems to work with. That way you're not stuck with one if you don't like it.
We have primarily FB's too, but also bought the grovia system as well, mainly for travel because you can use either cloth inserts or disposable.
Around 5 is plenty- blowouts are pretty rare in cloth and there's no need to change the cover with every diaper. My favorites for the small sizes were thirsties, both the regular and the duo. I found the one size covers too big until LO reached about 10 lbs. (We use prefolds during the day and AIO at night/when we're out, but used them exculsively for the first 3 months).

So, I just found our my SIL is handing down her collection of Bamboozles size 1 fitted diapers to us, but we will need to buy our own covers (she is still using her one size covers). We are getting 24 size 1 fitteds. When she is done with her size 2 fitteds, she will give us those and the covers as well, but it will be able 6mos-1year after our LO is born.
I was planning on using pocket diapers, and already have 8 fuzzibunz and 8 AMP pockets. I was wondering how many covers one would need with the 24 fitteds? I was thinking 6-8 but I am not sure!
Anyone using fitted liners/prefolds have any input for me?
I am thinking of Rumparooz one size covers, anyone use these?
