I’d go for 400. Some guests might have two, some might have one, and some might not get any. Personally, I’d get two and then maybe a third depending on how many were left after a while. I LOVE cake.

@blessings:  I am a professional baker and for mini cupcakes I would say 2-3 for each guest, so about 500-750 if all of your 250 guests RSVP. If you are doing more than one flavor I would try to have 250 of one flavor and maybe divide 250 or 500 by the number of each additional flavor. I dont know if that makes sense to you lol.

Mini’s are VERY small, one bite things. If you had gotten regular cupcakes I would say 1 for each and maybe order 15% more for those who really like cake. Usually people pack the candy away for later, so if your having cupcakes en lieu of cake then I’d go for the 2-3 minis per person.

I would get 2 per guest.  We had 100 guests at our wedding, we ordered 3 mini cupcakes per guest and had half left over :

@Miss Moxy:  can I ask your opinion? We will have 190 people at our wedding, and each person will get a dessert as part of the three course dinner. For our cupcake-instead-of-a-cake tower, do you think I will be fine just ordering 100 full sized cupcakes?

1.5 per person.

@ykyegbride Since you are having a desert course, I think it will be fine. Especially, if the desert course comes with small cookie platters and coffee. Even if it doesn’t…if you are having a cocktail hour and alcohol, I think 100 is gonna be enough. People will be full by then.

@blessings It would be cutting it close, to be honest, but maybe your guest will be considerate and eat one per person, you know them better than I would lol. I think if the reason you’re slimming down is because of your MIL, maybe she can chip in for more cupcakes? I mean it’s not neccessary.

I made a cake and mini cupcakes for a small wedding and all of it was gone! I made about 180, plus extra that I had baked off, 3 different flavors, for 60 people and a cake! It was craziness!

If you are having mini cupcakes in several flavors,  people are going to eat more than one,  probably two or more a piece. Even if there was candy,  I am much more likely to eat baked goods than candy.

@blessings:  Are all the mini cupcakes the same flavor?  If so, then I’d say 400 because most people will only take 1-2 if it’s the same flavor and on the same table as the rest of the desserts/candy.  If they’re all different flavors, then I’d say go with more.

ETA: I just saw that you’re having 5 flavors.  I would stick with 1 flavor or 2 if you want to save money.  If you’re having 5 flavors, expect people to take 2-3 and up to 1 of each flavor.

@futuremrsk18:

@blessings:

@chasesgirl:

I agree with futuremrsk18 and chasegirl, people are more inclined to take more cupcakes if you have more than one flavor because they want to sample things they may be intereted in. Keeping it to 2 flavors, will help you lessen the possibility of people taking 3-5 minis(one of each flavor) and save you money.

Again, mini’s are small! When I portion them 3 minis are roughly equal to one regular sized cupcake. You should ask your baker if there is a “wholesale” discount, ya know the more you but the cheaper the per unit cost is. 🙂

Out of curiosity do you guys think it’s better to do full size cupcakes or mini cupcakes? I’m considering doing cupcakes instead of wedding cake and I’d like to give a choice of flavours, which I thought could be better achieved by having more mini cupcakes, but would full size look better?

This is the kind of thing I’m looking at (probably the second pic or a combination)
