I had 2... but mine had to be taken in quite a bit, from a size 10 to a size 2. So my seamstress had to do it in stages.
I think it all depends on how the dress fits when you. I had my first last night and since I don't need much work I will go back on July 28th. If all is well then they will have it pressed and I will pick it up after that. If I need more alterations then I will have to go back one more time. I think it's usually around 2-3 fittings.
I went in two or three times. Once to do the initial fitting, and then again to check that she had done the fitting right. There was one last tiny alteration at the second fitting that I wanted. The bustle was a little funky because my dress had an asymmetrical skirt, which led to a bumpy bustle. When I came back the third time it was very casual and really just to pick up my dress; I saw that the change had been made and was happy.
So yes, one big fitting session is all I had. The closer your dress is to fitting you when you get it in the first place the fewer sessions you'll need. You'll have enough time. The smaller change I asked for at the second fitting only took a few days to fix, whereas the wait for the other fitting was longer. You'll be fine :)
Thank you ladies!
@ ddubzz - I, too, need to take my dress in from a size 10 to a 2. So I guess my seamstress has to do it in stages as well. How many sessions are you having? :)
My dress had to be taken in quite a bit as well (my dress was a 10, and I'm also a street size 2) but they got it done in one fitting. So I went it for a fitting, they made the alterations, then I came in to try it on and take it home. My dress store was 3 hours away so I wanted to make it as efficient as possible!
One thing to keep in mind is that if your last fitting is a ways out from the wedding, you might need little adjustments closer to the big day. I've lost some weight since I picked up my dress, so I'm nervous it might be a little too big!
Thanks farmersdaughter! That's very helpful. It's good they were able to take your dress from a size 10 to a 2 in one big alteration process. I hope they'll be able to do that with mine. Your wedding is coming up soon, are you going back for one more alteration? Thanks!
@AmberEyes, unfortunately I can't because my dress shop is so far away, I don't have time to go back. I'm nervous about that because I've lost some weight and think I might have to take it in a little more. I think I might look for a more local seamstress and go in for one last fitting, if there is time.
@AmberEyes: I had 2 fittings total. So, I went in the first time, the seamstress pinned the dress in as much as she could (there was a lot of fabric to take in!) and pinned the bustle. The second time, the dress was still a bit big so she pinned it even more. We tried out the bustle and it was perfect. I went in a third time to pick up the dress. I tried it on and it was perfect (I don't count this as a "fitting").
I had to take my dress in a couple sizes, and I had 2 different fittings, not counting the original one. I took it to her, put it on, and we looked at what we were going to do, then I came back and tried it on, found a few things that needed adjusting, so she did them, then I came back the last time and it was perfect!
@ farmersdaughter - you're right, a local seamstress would be more ideal.
@ ddubzz - Thank you for sharing this, may I ask when you went for these two fittings? My first one is scheduled in August, but I'm worried that it might be too close to the date. I'm wondering if I should go in now and have everything taken in, since my dress will also have a lot of excess fabric. Thanks!

How many times did you fit and alter your dress before the big day? My fitting for alteration is scheduled in August and my wedding is in October. Is one fitting session enough?
