    Hello bees!

I am planning on making a mat of carnations for the escort cards to sit on.  How many carnations do you think I would need for something like this?

I think it would definitely depend on how many escort cards you have. I'm pretty mathematical about things so this is how I would estimate it.

These are the assumptions I'm making:

    100 placecards (3 x 2, folded)

    1" between each column

You would need a foamboard that is 30" x 15" (you could get it from Michaels). The area of this rectangle is 450 square inches. It takes about 40 - 50 carnations to cover a 6 inch ball. The area of a 6 inch ball is a little more than 28 inches (28.6). Area of rectangle divided by area of the circle would be 16. And multiplied by the # of carnations for the 6 inch ball is would give you 640 - 800 carnations to cover the top part of the foam board.

Assuming the foamboard is only 1" thick, it would take about 20 - 30 carnations for each side.

Therefore, you would need approximately 680 - 860 carnations.

    HTH!!!

actually, i am thinking that 800 would be too much.  tell me if i am thinking right...the area of a 6" circle is 28 sq inches, a 6" sphere, like a pomander ball, is actually about 113 sq inches, so 450/113 is about 4.  If it takes 40-50 carnations to cover a 6" ball (which i am no expert on, just going on the previous post), you would only need 200 carnations, plus any you would want to put around the sides.  800 seems like a lot, and could end up being a waste of money, and you'd have carnations until the cows came home!

Wow, that is alot! I am looking at about 50 place cards because I am combining families/couples into one card.  I was thinking of using those flower picks that are used to hold the card in a bouquet.  That way the whole thing will be wind proof.
