I've been sleeping poorly. Like you I seem to be getting enough sleep but I'm somehow tired all the time. My FH and I do not live together, but I have noticed I sleep a lot better when I am at his house. Thank god I only have 3 weeks till the wedding cause I am not going to function well if I continue sleeping poorly.
Some tricks:
drink tea (non-caffinated) or warm milk before bed.
No reading, watching tv or listening to the radio before bed.
I do stretches and breathing exercies before sleep.
Hot shower or bath helps relieve tense muscles
Hope that helps.
I'm a night owl....and typically don't get in bed till at least midnight and probably don't fall asleep till about 12:30 or 1am....then have to get up at 6-6:30 to get ready for work.
It's a vicious cycle.
I'm pretty much always a little sleep-deprived. I work out in the morning before work; my gym opens at 5:30 and I'm there when they open. I usually get up about 4:30 so I can have a bit of computer time and make sure I'm ready to go on time. At night, I try to get to bed sometime between 9 and 10, but it usually ends up being more like 10-10:30. It probably sounds awful to some people, but I've been getting up this early pretty much every weekday since I was about 13, so it's just how I roll now. I actually sort of enjoy being up so early when it's nice and quiet.
I don't have any alertness tips...caffeine, unfortunately, does not have any effect on me. Sometimes I wish it did.
I'm usually in bed by 10:30 and usually get up at 6:30...and I agree that it's tough. I never drank coffee until I started working (even through college and law school), but that is the only thing that really wakes me up now...I hate that I need coffee to function! I want to start working out regularly again b/c that seemed to help me sleep better and just feel better throughout the day (better than when I used to spend so much $$$ on massages to help me relax)...but it's so hard to get back into the habit of working out regularly...
I noticed that if I sleep past 8 hours I am exhausted and can't function. So sleeping between 7 and 8 hours is great. I do make sure that I drink water all morning long and when I get out of bed I stretched just to get the juices flowing.
My sleeping patterns vary. From October to January I was maybe sleeping 5 hours a night because I was having so much difficultly falling and staying asleep. I was such a wreck and was exhausted all the time. Now, one of the medications I'm on conks me out so I sleep 7-8 hours a night and I'm still tired. In highschool I would sleep 8-9+ hours every night and I wasn't usually tired. Oh, that would be nice now!
i'd like to go to sleep around 11, but Fi likes to stay up and watch t.v. till 12, then we both wake up at 5:30...but on weekends i "sleep in" till 9!
Cupcake, my story sounds identical to yours!
I wish I could wake up RESTED! I have done this 1-2 times in the last year and it was a GREAT day!
I voted for 6-7 but most nights get around 7.5-8 hours, some night 7 or less. I am constantly tired and can fall asleep at the drop of a hat. not a good sign!
if i get even a drop less than 8 hours, i am dragging my feet the next day. i usually sleep from 11-7.30 and sometimes that isnt enough.
Boy do I feel lazy!!!
I usually am asleep by about 9:00 - 9:30 and I usually get up between 7:30 -8:30.
I've always slept lots, and if I don't get at least 10 hours of sleep I'm super grumpy all day long!
I'm surprised at how many people get less than 8 hours!
For those of you who constantly feel tired, even with a lot of sleep -- have you ever had your iron levels tested? I heard that low iron levels can cause fatigue.
I need at least eight hours of sleep. I often sleep nine. I can go a certain stretch of time on less and am very functional but then I crash or get sick. I do have trouble getting into a routine getting up early. I often work nights and the switch from getting home at 11 and being back at work at 10 a.m. is often tough.I just know what my body needs and I try to sleep as long as possible. I drink tea every morning, lots of coke zero and I exercies regularly, which tires me out and energizes me in the mornings.
On a related tangent... My dad and I were having a discussion about how it is often looked down upon to sleep in and stay up late, which we are both prone to do. It is looked more favorably to be an early riser, say like my in-laws who get up 5-6 each morning but are often in bed at eight... I just find it interesting.
I'm perfect with 7 hours and 15 minutes. I can run pretty well on anything more than 6 and I'm miserable if I get more than 8.5
sarsk624 - YES! Mr. Cupcake likes to go to bed early and wake up early, whereas I am the opposite. I always feel like a lazy bum when he's been up and out for 2 hours before I even wake up, but I prefer the nighttime to get stuff done!!!
cupcake - Med student here! Anemia is a very common cause of fatigue (even borderline anemia can have fatigue as a symptom), especially in women. We girls need to intake more iron since we output a lot (bleeding once a month!), and so we have a higher iron requirement than men. Anemia is low red blood cells - they are the ones that deliver oxygen all over your body, and need iron to make the hemoglobin that holds the oxygen in the cells. So if you do have pretty chronic fatigue, it's worth asking your doctor to do a blood test for iron levels to check if you are anemic. My MOH actually had some blood tests done for something else, they found out she was almost anemic and put her on iron supplements. She said she didn't realize how fatigued she was on a regular basis until she discovered how much extra energy she had after her iron levels went back up!

I constantly feel like I don't get enough sleep..... I usually go to bed by 11:00 or 11:30, and I wake up at 7:30 for work. Sometimes I don't get to bed till 12, which usually affects me the next day, but even the 11:00 nights have me feeling tired! That's 8.5 hours, which I think should be more than enough. Last night I went to bed at 10 and I'm STILL dragging (and I've been eating much better, so it's not a lack of nutrients making me tired). I have always felt like I am the kind of person who just needs 9 or 10 hours of sleep to function well, but I can't stand it. I like to stay up late and get things done, but it kills me the next day.
How many hours a night do you sleep? Do you always feel tired even when you get 8+ hours? Do you have a trick to staying peppy even when you're functioning on less sleep?
