My fiance and I really just wanted to Ipod the reception music (its a small wedding, just 50 guests) and I was wondering how long we should book a band for? We’re not going to be dancing — it would just be a nice addition I think, my fiance likes jazz a lot. Would 3 hours be all right? Our reception (cocktails) begins at 5:30 pm and I think we will have the venue until 9:00. Thoughts?

We’re having our band (a local 19 pc big band) for 4 hours including 3 15 minute set breaks. However, we are expecting dancing and that does not include dinner and our band had a flat rate up to 4 hours.

We had ours for 4 hours. People danced the ENTIRE time.

I’m having a DJ and he’s coming for 4 hours. I want it to be longer, but I’m not paying for the extra hour. Plus, it will be nice to leave the venue earlier and have fun time with my hubby! 🙂

Our DJ will play guitar with another guy for cocktail hour, then DJ a 4 hr dinner reception.
I’m not sure from your wording what kind of reception you are referring to, and if the ipod is in addition to a band or in place of?
If you do book something, be sure to get from them when and how long their breaks are and if they play background music during breaks and their dinner or not.

Thanks for the replies!
@thewheelsonthebus: The Ipod is in place of a band 🙂 Figured I wanted to spend the $$$ but it might be too boring without live music…

Our band is playing for 4 hours during the reception.

Your wedding sounds a lot like ours! Same amount of guests and same time line. We are trying to hire a duo that will take us from the ceremony to the cocktail hour and then for our sit down reception. We will only have a little slow dancing and that is about it. We are just having a hard time with how much money we should be spending on the music.

We are having a DJ and he only works a minimum of a 5 hour set so we are doing that (8pm to 1am)
