The flight from NYC to LA is around six hours or so... it actually takes a lot more time than I thought to fly across the country!
How about you: how long does it take you to fly/drive/take-the-train/whatever-you-usually-do to meet up with your SO?
welllll... that depends. :) It's an 8 hour train ride (or 2 hour flight) to Beijing + 12 hour flight from BJ to New York, then another hour and a half flight from New York to DC - plus layovers. My flights this winter have short layovers, so from BJ to DC will 'only' take me 18 hours, plus the 8 hour train ride and a few hours in BJ before my flight.
So... I leave my house at 6:30am, gain 13 hours in transit, and am hopefully out of the DC airport by 9:30pm the same day. Yay!
We live 3002 miles apart exactly. It's a 5 and a half hour flight and 3 and a half hour drive.
I wonder when they'll start bottling Flew Powder for us (a la Harry Potter) so we dont have to deal with the silliness of airplanes...hmmmm. Well, maybe not. I might be out a job if we stop making airplanes, lol
4 hr drive, depending on traffic. I spent 7 hrs on a bus once trying to get to NYC.
@fifty - I hear you - I always feel like such a "sissy" when I complain and someone says "well I have to get on a plane to see my SO" LOL whoops! I'll take the 4 hr drive!
3.5 hours driving, which is the closest in terms of miles that we've done since he was in the Navy. I think the longest distance we were at was 20,000 leagues under the sea for deployments :)
I didn't realize you weren't both in NYC Mr. Bee! Do you travel most weekends?
How about the rest of you? How often do you make the trip to see your SO? Lambster and I travel about every other weekend.
it's about 4.5 hours if i get a nonstop flight but usually closer to 5-7 hours with connections. if you add in the time i have to get up to catch my flights [especially since i'm gaining hours, i usually take the first flight out of cali in the morning], i'm already awake for 12 straight hours before i even land! and we hit the ground running so i'm usually not that fun the first day of our visits. lol.
@lamb, that was before mrs. bee moved to nyc! as for me and the boy, we try to get in a visit every 3-4 months or so but it's been tough as of late. it's just been expensive to travel!
We are a 2.5-3hr plane ride from each other: NYC to STL. Not too bad considering. Definitely not the ideal way to spend our first married years together, but we try to see eachother 3 weekends a month or the equivalent. We have made it work so far.
We are exactly a 3 hour flight from each other (Denver & Atlanta). We see each other every other weekend. I can't wait to live together. I am so sick of traveling!
For me it takes, 4 hours to get from Calgary to Toronto. A 2 hour stopover and then an hour flight from Toronto to Boston. So that's about 7 hours of travelling. Of course that's not including check in, picking up baggage and going through customs!
wow! i feel so lucky now. we're not LD anymore but it was a 1.5 hour flight, or a 14 hour drive! you girls are so brave :)
Takes me about 3 hours to fly to California, and from there it's about a 12 to 13 hour flight. And I lose a whole day (where does it go?) But I get to time travel into the future, so it's not that bad.
14 hour drive... but only a 2.5 hour flight.
So, I suppose we're pretty lucky - I don't have to cross an ocean or anything.
But. We do only see each other about 5 or 6 times a year.
Which was fine before we got married but SUCKS right now!
We're about a 13 hour drive or a 2-3 hour flight. The time zones make it more convenient one way than the other.
4 hours in the plane. usually at least 7 hours of travel with airport and driving time.
I like to measure it by miles...2,200 miles apart for 13 months. And now we're happily together!!
3.5 hours drive right now, used to be 10 hours drive, so i'm very happy about that.
Approx 2.25 hours from each other with public transport, 1.75-2hours in a car. Stupid Welsh mountains in the way!
p.s. Between May '07 and Nov '08 it was closer to 4 hours, this is an improvement!
I gotta say, all you ladies who talk about how it's 'harder' to do longer distances, I'm not sure I agree with you. For J and I, being so far apart means we have almost no expectations. I don't expect to see him, ever. If we lived closer, I know I'd be dealing with, "Maybe he'll come up and surprise me this weekend!" or "When's the next time we can get together?" freak outs all the time. But knowing neither of us has $1000+ to throw away on plane tickets, I just go about my life happy without him until the time comes for us to be together. :)
We're a bit over/under (depending on the driving conditions) an hour away - yes, that's not as much as several LDRs but it's almost more agonizing that way. I swear on it.
On a good day.. a one hour drive. It used to be a one hour flight but a 6-8 hour drive. Southern Cali to Northern Cali. Glad his job transferred him.
Total travel time (on average) 12 hours.
30 minute border crossing
2.5 hour drive to the Seattle Airport
1 hour wait before bording
4 hour flight
1-4 hour layover
1 hour connection flight
1 hour drive to FIs home
same as mr.bee's, a 6+ hour flight from SF to NJ. I'm in SF he's in NJ. we usually see each other every 3 months.
He's in Toronto, I'm in PA...takes about a 7 hour drive unless we decide to meet up in Niagara and then its a 5 hours drive
I think my flight normally ends up being between 15 and 18 hours (Tokyo to Boston). I kinda agree with daydreamwanderer, while its hard to be so far away, it has its advantages over shorter distances too. I never feel guilty that I'm not making a trek to see him on the weekends when I have stuff to do out here, because that would never be an option for me. That said, when I get a three-day weekend now and then it would be great to be able to see him for a bit, or know that he could be here soon if something happened to me (I had medical problems the first couple months out here and it sucked not having my guy by my side).
12.5 hours driving.
About 3 to 4 hours flying, with an hour long drive to where he is from the airport.
I'm in StL, MO, he's in Ft. Walton Beach, FL.
@zippylef, whoa! I used to live in Ft. Walton Beach when I was a little girl. Beautiful beaches.
My man is 6 hours away by car, or 45 minutes by puddlejumper. The drive is far more common a choice. Long and tedious, but as someone else said, so worth it.
we live about an hour apart. not so major like most of you LDR gals, (and guys), but our work schedules make it hard to be together. we see eachother on the weekends.
At first we were: 18hr drive, 2.5 hr flight
Then we were: 3 hr drive, 45min flight
Now: 5 minute drive
I don't know how you girls in long distance relationships do it. i live fifteen mins from my boyfriend!
We are a 2 1/2 hour drive (for him) or a 2 1/2 hour train ride (for me - I don't have a car). When I was in still in school we were either a 20 hr drive or about 5 hours on a plane (with a layover). 2 1/2 feels like nothing now - we get to see each other almost every weekend.
11 hour drive/ 2 hour flight from CLT to FLL... hoping to close the gap very soon!
My FI is leaving for graduate school in a few weeks...we will be about 4 hours driving distance apart or about a 1 hour...
My FI is finishing up college while I'm already done. In in Chicago and he is near Dayton, OH. Thats a 6 hour drive or a 2ish hour flight.
