When I got my PhD, I applied for probablt 15 jobs in my field, all that I was honestly qualified for since at the point of application I did not have degree in hand. I got none but found part time university employment. Now, I’m on the job market for the 2013-2014 academic year. Most application are due November 1, but one of them was due today. I’m applying for about 30 jobs.

@chasesgirl:  I’m applying nationwide and to jobs in Canade, New Zealand, and Australia. DH will follow me.

Each job will probably get some 150 applications.

Maybe between 7-15 because there just weren’t that many options and I can’t relocate at the moment – I read through a lot of job ads though, invested a ton of hours into my job search, and got a job not in my field but that I liked at first.

It’s gone downhill so now after barely 4 months, I’m having to start all over again and I’ve applied to a few so far.

None. Went straight back to school. I love spending copious amounts of money instead of making it.

    Blech.

I applied for about 200 jobs when I graduated from nursing school!  It’s such a misconception that there is a nursing shortage, at least in the NW.  After five months, countless applications, and six interviews, I landed my dream job in my hometown as a mother baby RN!  That was almost two years ago now and I still am amazed how the stars aligned.

About 20-30, but that was expected at the timme in my industry. I am a teacher, and in New Zealand you get hired by individual schools, not schools boards, but you can use the same CV for each school with different cover letters. My 30 got me 3 interviews, and one job (I called the other two to cencel/ decline, so don’t knwo if I would have succeeded)

I lost count.  My now FI supported me for 3 months before I found a job.  I couldn’t secure full time employment so I’ve been a temp.  That job lasted a few months then I went on umemployment and moved and got a job the week before my unemployment was suppost to run out.  I am currently unemployed again.  I thought my last job was going to be the one but I got laid off shortly after my contract got renewed.

It’s looking like I will have to take a job that’s not in my field for a little while because my unemployment will be running out soon.  It’s the first time I will have to take a job outside of the realm of science.

Straight out of under grad I was hired by the organization where I had my internship<<<great way to get your foot in the door.

in the years following I have applied to about 10-15 inbetween jobs…some I never heard back from, some I wasn’t qualified for without a Masters, and 3-5 i’d interview with and be offered jobs.

In grad school now getting that Masters.  I graduate in June, so we’ll see how that goes 🙂

after undergrad, i applied to probably less than 10, was about to be offered one but I pulled out of it. i was applying to Phds then too (graduated early in dec), but had a moment of you’re 21 what are you doing?? so instead i left my current job (at a music venue, which i lovedddd) and went and worked in exchange for room board (plus other perks and amazing experience) to live on this conference center/intentional community. after that I spent 2-3 years travelling. now i just finished my master’s, and man i have applied for a lot of jobs! economy sucks now! the average job search period is 8 months, btw. (unemployment is 8-10% depending where you are, and underemployment is estimated at 30%, meaning about 1 in 3 people are looking for work!!) i did get a job, but it’s not permanent so i will still be looking in my field. in the meantime i also bartend, and i make in 2 nights what i make in a 40-hr week with my other job! man lol

    0… kinda.

I did a practicum in my last semester of university and before I finished an opening came about that they approached me to take becuse they wanted me to stay on indefinitely.  It was a little loosely related (a little more admin work than I would have liked) but within 6 months I’d moved to something more suitable through internal postings.

I graduated before the time of emailing resumes to people (man I feel old)…..

So I snail mailed TONNES of social work agencies, and GOT A JOB…and that was just an on call position with a group home…but I was able to get to where I am now because of that job…..11 years later I now have 8 years seniority with the school board and love my job…..I’ve been in my current position for 4 years….

THere’s a good chance that you will have to work up to a position you love and will stay in, but don’t sluff off the stuff that you think aren’t for you…because you never know!
