How many months before your wedding did you sign the paperwork and put down a deposit on your venue?
I’m curious because all the guides say to do this a year or more in advance. We’re eleven months out and we’re having a small, very dyi wedding. Because I’m still looking for a job and we’re paying for the wedding ourselves, we have two possible venues picked out but have yet to sign contracts and plunk down cash.
Anyone else book their venue ‘late’?

@renwoman: We booked our venue almost exactly a year in advance, and I think 11 months would have been fine as well. And with a DIY wedding? You’ll be just fine! 🙂

Oh gosh, we booked ours 17 months before our wedding lol.

@renwoman: We booked ours 17 months out. I liked having the peace of mind that we got what we wanted. My venue told me that not 3 weeks after I reserved our date, another bride wanted it. I think it all depends on the area you live in, and if your date is somewhat felxible. If so, doing it later is totally workable.

@renwoman: People do that all the time! SO’s sister just booked her venue, about 9 months away. And lots of people plan a wedding in 6 months – I think you just have to be more flexible on your date and venue choice, if you don’t book as far in advance.

We booked last month, so about 11 months before. Our wedding is a destination in the south of france though (actually got got back from seeing the venue in real life!) so it was important for us to pick a venue ASAP.
The only thing I would fear is the venue being booked for the day you want.

Our place was in demand so we booked 15 months ahead, and even then there was only one ballroom left out of 4 for our date! How quickly you book depends on how quickly they fill up, how sure you are it’s the perfect place and how much you want the peace of mind that comes with checking it off your list. If on a scale of 1-10 you rate at least an 8 for 2 out of the 3 I would do it.

We had a small (50 ppl) wedding at a restaurant with an outdoor space for the ceremony. We put the deposit 7 months before.

@renwoman: We booked ours wayyyyyyyy early. 18 months in advance

@renwoman: Ours was booked a little less than 9 months. We had no specifics on the date just a couple of months we would like to get married in and took what was available.

We booked ours 17 months in advance. It was already filling up and we really wanted a specific date!

@renwoman: We booked ours almost exactly a year in advance. Since you’re having a small wedding, you should be fine on the planning end. Your challence will just be making sure you book it in time to secure the place you really want or be OK with having to go somewhere else if another couple books it first.

@renwoman: Just finalizing ours now. Wedding is in 9 months! So much to do…

Depends on where you are, where you want to book, what time of year you’re booking. Obviously popular time frames/places are going to be booked up earlier than others. We booked our wedding and put a deposit down in February for our wedding in six weeks (eee!). If I’d wanted the weekend before, I wouldn’t have been able to get anything, I don’t think.
