Most say 6 months before trying to conceive. I’ve been taking a women’s health vitamin that includes folic acid a long time ago so that’s good. Most people don’t get pregnant right away so you should be okay if you start taking it now.I haven’t even taken my Mirena out but know I will within the next couple of months. Lol

My NP advised me to take prenatals for at least 3 months before trying.  It took us a while, so by the time I got pregnant, I had taken them for a year.

Basically I was told to start taking prenatal vitamins as soon as I started thinking about TTCing.  By the time we got pregnant, I had been taking them for over a year.

If you’re thinking about TTCing, I’d just switch to a prenatal vitamin.  One less thing to have to worry about.

I was told to take prenatals for a year before TTC. My doctor explained it as that in the beginning the baby is living off of you and how healthy you were previously. If you are sick 24/7 during the 1st trimester and can only keep down pizza, then if you already had the vitamins in your system then the baby is still getting it’s nutrients.

Lots of women do not take it before TTC, so if you have not already, just start now and don’t worry about making sure you do it 6-12 months before. I started taking prenatals about 6 months before TTC but not everyday by any means. Just whenever I remembered.

There are many pregnant woman who never took prenatals before getting pregnanct and delivered perfectly healthy babies. I think prenatals are a way to take precaution, but in no way would I suggest that if you got pregnant, your baby would not be healthy if you didn’t take prenatals before.

I didn’t start taking them until I found out I was 4 weeks pregnant because we weren’t TTC. I’d say if you’re taking them at ALL before getting pregnant you are ahead of the game. 🙂

As long as you were taking a vitamin that had folic acid in it (all women’s multi vitamins have at least 400 mcg, which is the min recommended amount) you should be fine. It doesn’t have to be specifically froma prenatal vitamin.

My doctor told me as long as I’m taking a multivitamin, I didn’t have to start prenatals until we actually start TTC.
