I’ve registered for 12 place settings of china and crystal. The dining room table that I currently own only seats six. I’d like to get a new dining room table, but that’s not going to happen in the immediate future. How many cloth napkins should I register for? 6 because that’s how many seats I have? 12 because that’s how many place settings I registered for? Some other number?

@Ms. Kitty: I would do at least twelve so you have a complete set. If you are worried about them getting ruined (I don’t know how likely napkins are to get ruined, because they should be designed with use in mind) you can order 13 or 14. (My mom has a set of 13 for all formal things because she thinks if she orders 12 one will break and then she won’t have a complete set anymore.)

I would echo the 13 or 14. Sometimes you want to use one in a bread basket or replace it if someone sops up a mess, etc.
How often do you think you would use them? Will you want new ones in a few years anyway? Also, how expensive are they/do you need more things on your registry? Napkins are usually a good item for the lower price point, so you may want lots on their anyway. From what I’ve seen, people usually buy them in groups of 4 or 6 anyway, so maybe register for lots and decide later if you don’t want to complete the set?
