How many of our miscommunications spring from email, texts, blog comments, and anything else that isn’t really face to face communication? I know we’re not the teens talked about, but seriously — does anyone else worry about how the world is changing?

Oh yeah, my FI and I have argued over texts before. It’s too easy to misinterpret things and from there it escalates. From now on, if I’m confused or annoyed by a text or email, I call and clarify- before I get angry!

We try to talk as much as possible and just text silly little things. We have a “no texting when angry” policy that is working out really well! I do worry about how the world is changing, but mostly for my future kids. I was raised where we sat down and had dinner together and talked to each other, etc, so I feel like I have a good foundation for communicating…hopefully I can give the same foundation to my future kids.

What a coincidence that this topic was brought up today! I’m actually feeling kind of upset because of an email I recieved from an aquaintance that I read to be kind of snarky. I’ll be the first to admit that I can be sensitive, but when something that can be construed as rude is written in a text or email and isn’t followed by an exclamation point, I take it as it was meant to be rude!
I’m actually probably overly paranoid about making sure anything I write in a text or email isn’t taken rudely, so I tend to use a lot of exclamation points just so the reader knows that.
Now I’m left wondering if this person meant to be rude or if she was just in a hurry, or doesn’t overuse exclamation marks like I do…??? it’s a slippery slope for sure!

I do this all the time!
As a grad student I feel like the only communication I receive is via email and often I can’t read the ‘tone’ of the email being sent and I am usually bad and convince my self that it has a negative undertone which then upsets me!

The tone is always lost in text and email, even here on WeddingBee, I have to be super-conscious not to sound snarky.
