So I know they said they price was going up in Sept, but i never paid attention and then realized that they have now been billing me $17 and change, instead of my regular $9.99, DH said we should just get rid of the DVD part and just have the streaming option. But I'm wondering if we should just keep it since its only about $7 more than we were paying before. But he is just irritated with netflix in general and thinks its too much of a price rise.  I was just curious how many of you cancelled all or part of your plan due to the price rise?

Interestingly enough Blockbuster is now running a 30 day free trial on dvds by mail. and they are usuing the netflix price rise to boost themselves up.

I cancelled the DVDs-by-mail feature when the Qwikster thing was introduced (mostly because it annoyed me). Now, we just do streaming. I thought about signing up for the mail feature again, but it's just not worth it.

I didn't cancel because my kids LOVE the shows on there, and we had Blockbuster which was almost $40 a month. So this was much cheaper.

Yes. Partly because I was annoyed with Netflix, but mostly just because our home entertainment bills were getting out of control. Redbox, Netflix, HBO, Shotime, all those premium channel package things. My husband also catches PPV boxing sometimes. We've had to seriously cut back, especially with another baby on the way.

I didn't change anything. I've had netflix for 8 years and the pricing has been so steady for so long that I kind of felt like the increase was long overdue. I just don't like the way they handled it, but whatever, I'm only paying like $5 more so who cares.

We cancelled but it was long overdue. We hadn't been using it for a while and the price increase got the ball rolling. Feel bad for them, as it wasn't really an unreasonable increase compared to what we get, but they handled it just terribly.

We canceled in my house too, because of the poor service and the price hike.

We used to have Netflix and actually cancelled before the price change.  We just found we used Hulu Plus a lot more than Netflix so it wasn't worth paying for.

I decreased from 2 DVDs and streaming to 1 DVD and streaming.  Now we pay around $20/month and that includes Blu Rays.  I think that's more than a reasonable price for pretty much unlimited movies.  I kept the DVD option because I like getting newer movies, and some rare horror movies I watch are not available streaming.

@Mrs.KMM:  we did the same thing.  Kept the streaming but reduced from 3 to 2 DVDs.  I love the streaming capability, but we wanted to keep the DVDs too because there are so few new release movies on streaming.  I think this is about to change - Netflix just made some big deals with movie production houses, but we will decide whether to keep the DVDs once these agreements go into effect.

We just have streaming so it costs us $7.99 a month... we'll keep it probably until it changes.

I downgraded my service over a year ago before all this pricing drama. I had the package with the 3 DVDs, then went down to one at a time. Now, I just get the online streaming, which I may actually cut soon. I don't have local or cable TV, so it's a nice change of pace, but I find myself watching Hulu.com or the network channels (ABC, NBC, etc.) online more than anything now.

We downgraded to just the streaming. We didn't get DVDs very often and figured if we wanted to we could use the Blockbuster Express up at our gas station. $1 rentals!

We didn't cancel, only because even with the price change, Netflix is still the most affordable and customizable option available to us.

We dropped everything because we were so annoyed with Netflix. We were customers since almost the very beginning but lately they really got on our nerves so we had to cancel on priciple.  I think I read somewhere they ended up losing 800,000 customers or something like that. Hopefully this will teach them to pay more attention to their customers and not just stats!

I actually just cancelled the DVD part a few days ago. We kept the streaming, but when we want to see a movie we usually just pick one up from Redbox. The last Netflix DVD we had, we held onto for about 2 months! So not good use of the money.

While I understand they hadn't increased prices for years, I think it was to large of a price hike to make at one time. In my opinion they would have done better to slowly raise prices over the course of a few years as I think they would have held onto more customers.

We downgraded to streaming only, but we'd been planning to do that for awhile (the same 3 DVDs had been sitting in our living room for over a year, but we watch netflix streaming almost every single day).  I didn't really begrudge them the price increase because I follow business news and knew that it was getting harder for them (and hulu and other legal streaming providers) to negotiate rights with networks and studios.  It was more about getting my butt in gear to stop paying for something we never used.

We're streaming only. We had the DVD option back when it was like, $2 more, but we hardly ever used it. Now we rent movies from Redbox and stream from Netflix.

I think the problem was there was no pre-announcement for people to get used to the idea. And people are reacting to the way it was handled less so than the actualy price increase.

If they wanted to survive they had to change their pricing structure, they just addressed it with their customers very very poorly. It is still a good value and provides a good servicve- and in reality for some people that only use one service or the other saves them money.

We didnt change anything because we use both services (and dont have cable at all) so its still cheap for us.

I considered it-- not because of the price but because they were splitting up their streaming and DVD services, and losing Starz (its best source of streaming content).

unfortunately, other streaming sites are not as good as netflix yet.  as soon as amazon streaming gets up to speed, I'll probably cancel netflix.  besides, it will get me off my butt so I can start patronizing my local "mom and pop" DVD rental place again.

We canceled, partially due to the increase...but mostly because we had a terrible habit of keeping the same DVDs for months at a time.

We've always been streaming only and frankly, I don't consider that a downgrade! Getting DVDs in the mail seems positively archaic to me. I looooove my streaming Netflix!

We're getting rid of the streaming and just keeping the DVD option.  We've been noticing that there is never anything we want to watch on streaming.  Everything is old and random.  So I guess it wasn't due to the price hike but yeah, we downgraded.

Well, DH & I both had accounts, so it was for 2 reasons that I cancelled mine.  The costs were getting too high, and he had an account, so it just made sense.  Furthermore, DH cancelled his DVD subscription, and now only has streaming.  Netflix made such a poor decision with their new business plan - they were doing so well before!

I heard they were going to change the pricing...but didnt know it already happened. We probably won't cancel yet, since I've started using it more. But we stream through the playstation, so this might be something for us to talk about. Thanks for the heads up!

We switched to just the live streaming. We hardly ever went to the trouble of doing the mail service anyway. I just wish the newer movies came to live streaming quicker.

I really don't understand what all the fuss was about regarding their prices.  Maybe because I was always surprised at how cheap it was and that they never raised prices, I figured it was long overdue.  I got an email giving me a heads up the price would be raised and was totally fine with it. lefeymw said she thought smaller frequent upgrades would have been better but I personally dislike those.  I guess because I feel like I have no idea where they're going to stop and that it's just nickle and diming.

That said, I voted "Yes we downgraded" although that was only because it was long overdue.  We had had the same movie for 2 months and the one before that for just as long.  Streaming is all we really needed so we went ahead and dropped to that plan.

I never got it.  I've checked it out a few times, but in Canada their selection isn't great and of the movies I've been interested in, they have had like maybe 1 of the 10 I've checked.  Maybe when I'm done school I might look into them again.

There are no video stores near me.  There used to be a Rogers and a Blockbuster.  When the Rogers closed (it was the closest) DH and I sought out the Blockbuster, and argued about where we thought it was located.  Got home and checked, at the time they had reduced to only two in the city (before they went bankrupt).  The Safeway is a 5 min walk though, and has a DVDplay machine.  $1.88 with tax is way cheaper than what the video stores used to charge, and it's more convienant - grab a few groceries on a friday night and a movie.

Just take a look at their stock price!  Honestly raising their prices has hurt their business incredibly!!  The all time high on netflix stock is 304.79 a share.. it's currently at 83.53 a share

We never had the DVD plan... Only streaming & then would rent from redbox so it didn't change for us & we'll definitely keep it bc we don't have/want cable.
