Our tent was like 30'x60' and I think we had around 100 lanterns down the center of varying sizes. http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/08/11/father-daughter-dance-2/#more-156847 I know the space isn't the same, but hopefully it will give you some perspective-
So what I was trying to do, was count the ceiling tiles...I got 12 x12 or so from your pictures, but I'm going to say maybe it's 20x15 just because it's hard to see all of them....This is how I would do it, draw a grid that's the dimensions of the tiles, and draw circles to represent your lanterns, it doesn't give you the hanging effect but you can get an idea of how many you might need.
gloss- very pretty wedding pictures. That does give me an idea on how many I need.
divergirl- That is a good idea! I hadn't thought of doing that. It is hard because our venue is about 3 hours away. I need to go measure something so that I know how much lights we will need, etc. When I go I will have to count the titles AND measure the dance area. We won't be able to get out that way until Thanksgiving :-( Boo!
I guessed and got too many :( But I sold them, because paper lanterns are in high demand :)
Personally, i don't like really tiny lanters, IMO the 8" and 12" were too small. I went with various sizes of 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24. I love variation of sizes :)

As a general rule, buy more than you think you need (like double!) and that should be about right! Unless mapping out the ceiling tiles works out, then you'll have a more accurate idea, I think.

Please help me decide how many paper lanterns I should get for our dance area.I was thinking 30 (different sizes, in purple, olive, and cream), I don't want it to look sparse but I would also like to not buy more than I need. I wouldn't mind having too much (as long as its not WAY too much). Also I am not sure about what sizes I should get. Again I don't want really small ones and really big ones (to the point where it looks odd).
*I know these aren't very good pictures, but hopefully they are enough. Don't mind the chairs and ladder, they were cleaning and doing maintenance.
