I think it can definitely be smaller. We are doing ours at the rehearsal dinner, so just having enough for those in attendance, but I can't imagine every person at your wedding will eat regular cake AND the groom's cake. I heard somewhere that a lot of guests don't eat any cake at all.
I would do less then 50% of your guest. Don't make it too small so that people that don't like cheesecake will have the option to have cake instead.

I have to let my cake lady know how many people to make the groom's cake for. Is it supposed to be for all the guests or just a portion? It's going to be our only real cake, the rest is cheesecake.
