We will have registered at a total of 3 stores. We have them all in different prices ranges as well. Macy's, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Walmart.
I just registered at Target due to the economy and a lot of my friends and relatives don't have much now a days. I wanted to be conscience of that.
Just Bed Bath and Beyond for us. The only other place we would have considered is Macy's, but their prices are pretty much exactly the same as BB&B. There's only a few things there that we would want, and just not worth it to have a second registry.
We did 3. Bed Bath and Beyond, Crate and Barrel, and Home Depot. I thought Macy's was much more expenssive then Crate and Barrel.
since your mom works for the 2 companies, I think it makes sense for you to register for them both. I would do the 4 stores so you have a larger price range.
Crate and Barrel actually has a lot of affordable stuff!
We are registered at
1) Crate and Barrel
2) Williams Sonoma
3) Target!
4) Bed Bath and Beyond
Target is for the other cool stuff (a Wii, bluray player) that we couldnt get at those other places
We did BB&B as well because they have much cheaper pots and pans
We are doing 4, but since the invitations were printed Home Depot no longer has a registry so it's down to three. I personally wish we only did two Macy's and Crate and Barrell, but we are doing Macy's, Crate and Barrell, and Target. I added Target for guests thinking things would be lesse expensive, but to be honest most of the stuff is higher quality and at a better price at Macy's.
I don't think four is too much, just make sure you have enough items to spead out of four registries.
We just did 2 - Crate & Barrel (a MUST for me!) and Amazon.com
The beauty of the Amazon.com registry is the Universal Registry button where you can register for things at pretty much ANY online store and add it to just the one registry (I think Miss Rainbow blogged about that). So while we only have 2 physical registries, we've put some stuff on the Amazon one from a few different places.
i registered at 2, bb&b and target. even with just two i still had trouble managing the registries (somehow an ice cream scoop and some other little items snuck onto both registries), and i felt like it was plenty for us to choose from, if not too much. too much overwhelms me!
We did 3 - Macys, Target and Bed Bath & Beyond.
Something to also consider is the location of some of your guests. You want to be sure to register at places that are accessible to them, as well. (The three I listed above are great, as they are large chains and also allow you to view registries online.)
We did Macy's, Kohls and Bed BAth & Beyond. All were good for different reasons. Macy's handled some China defects and crystal breakage in shipping expertly. Kohls just took back and exchanged a Shark sweeper that I had only used a few times before it stopped working. I didn't have the recipti because it was a shower gift and was not on the registry as I had a Shark hand vac on the registry.
Macys, Williams Sonoma (b/c we love to cook), and Amazon. We are contemplating a honeymoon registry, but probably won't do it.
I think 4 is fine. Plus, a lot of places give you discounts for completing your registry, so even if you don't get some of the things from your registry you can use any cash or gift cards you get for your wedding to get the things you want for cheaper!
We did Macy's, Crate & Barrel, and Williams Sonoma (although the WS is smaller than the other two)
We have Macys and BB&B and are going to Target today to consider a registry there. I hate, hate, HATE target registries but we want some stuff there that you can't find anywhere else. It will be listed last on the website because I'd rather not too many people purchase things there since returns are a pain in the behind...
We did Macy's and Bed Bath and Beyond.
And btw, I agree Crate and Barrel and PB are pretty similar. And if you add macy's, there will be lots of things they carry over from Crate and Barrel.
We registered at Macy's, Pottery Barn and Sears. Choosing Sears really made my FI happy since it allowed him to pick out tools. He's in school for mechanical engineering, so his hobbies tend to lean toward building and design. We also put some electronics and camping gear on that registry as well.
As for Macys, I loved the Martha Stewart kitchen line. However, I'm finding that a lot of our things are showing up as "currently unavailable" or "in very limited quantities." Some items were completely discontinued. It's a little discouraging since we were drawn to the colors of a lot of those items. I hate spending my engagement having to pick out new registry items every other week. :/
We've only got 2. I'm a little obsessed with Pottery Barn so that's a no brainer. We would've done Macy's but we found that Bath & Beyond had the same products for cheaper and people can use those coupons that're always coming in the mail.
We registered for 4, but the majority of our stuff is at 3.
Bed Bath & Beyond: We registered for MOST things here including our pots/pans, dishes, kitchn appliances, kitchen gadgets, etc.
Macy's: Here we registered for our bedding (just because I love the Hotel Collection so much), some beach towels, bath towels, and a few odds and ends.
Crate & Barrel: More unique kitchen gadgets, all of our glasses and barwear, etc.
Kohls: This was somewhat a mistake. We wanted luggage, but we wanted to get the other stuff more. We figured if we registered for luggage at a separate store, the majority of people would get us the other stuff instead. Kohl's had the best deal. We contemplated scratching this registry, but my mom decided to surprise me by printing our shower invites early (with Kohl's printed on it). :(
I think it's a good idea to register at multiple places. People want options! If you only do 1 and people are last minute shoppers, chances are they might only be expensive items left and people would feel obligated to get you those things that they could maybe not afford. Registering at multiple places with multiple price options is your best bet. Plus, people who are out of town may not have access to certain stores and believe it or not... some people still don't like to shop online!!
Hope this helps! :)
Originally we registered just at C & B and Macy's. I've had two showers and a third/final one approaching in 2 weeks. Our registeries are pretty much wiped out so I think we need to go register at a 3rd location as my side of the family will want to give actual gifts for the wedding. (FI's side will give money.) There is nothing more at C & B nor Macy's that we want so I'm think about going to either Target or Home Depot.
We registered at 3 - Crate & Barrel, BB&B and a department store here in Ireland. My thinking was that we would manage if we got nothing off any of the lists and we'd be thrilled if we got lots. It's definitely a good idea to have a wide range of prices/items but also make sure you put things on there that you'd never let yourself buy - have some fun with it and don't feel too bound by 'practicality' - it's a one-shot deal!
we are registering at target and bed bath and beyond this weekend so people can choose whichever one is closer to them based on where they are in the country!
We registered at Macy's and Target. I'm apparently the worst bride ever at registering because we have less than 75 items (combined) for a 200 guest wedding.... We'll probably have to go out and look again before too long.
@ libra - that's funny. You're so not the worst bride! LOL But a word of warning - one of my college roommates did the same thing - she didn't register for much & had a large wedding. They ended up with a lot of presents they didn't register for and she really didn't like at all & people don't always give a receipt with the gift. ;)
FI and I only registered at Wal-Mart, but we are thinking about registering at JC Penney or Belk as well. We still haven't had any wedding showers or anything so we still have time!
I have five, so obviously I don't think there is a problem with having 4. And even though our invites aren't out yet I have had three showers and guests have purchased items off of all of them. I'm registered at Bloomingdales, Williams - Sonoma, Crate and Barrel, Tiffany and an independant china store for unique, hand-made dining accessories and linens. I've found that my guests love the range of prices and choices. And when I've been a guest, I've appreciated it as well. There is no way that we will get everything off of all of them, but that was never the point to me. My registries at Tiffany and the independent store are pretty small and my Williams-Sonoma registry is the longest but as I mentioned, I've received multiple gifts from all of them so in retrospect I'm really glad that I did 5.
What is your concern about having more than 3? Is it maintaining them? Or are you worried about what people will think?
Also, as an aside, we are recently out of college (well, FI more than me) and our friends have been buying off C&B - there are a lot of very reasonable items available there to put on your registry, so if you love the store, you shouldn't NOT register there. They also have fabulous registry events that are really helpful and fun!
@PomPom I am not too concerned about handling the 4 registry's especially because our Pottery Barn one wouldn't be too large. I'm just nervous with people thinking we are being too pushy or pretentious registering at so many places as if we are expecting to get soooo many gifts. My Fiance is coming in town next weekend so we are going to go check out the four places we are interested in registering at. Then we are going to see how many items would overlap or if we really need the 4.
Oh and to those that mentioned the location We only have a small handful of out of town guests and STL has all of the stores we would register at so there will not be a problem with people getting gifts from the stores.
Thanks for everyone's opinions!
C+B, Macys, and Michael C. Fina. I shop almost exclusively online, so I wanted something with that option (to do my registries, initially). Luckily, C+B and Macys brick-and-mortar stores are close by to my family!
I think four is too many and you'll end up getting a lot of things that don't go together. If you have all of one type of item (say, your bedding) at a store that no one really ends up going to, then you might not receive any of those items.
I think Macy's is a good pick because there is a Macy's everywhere, people are used to shopping there, there are a wide range of prices.
I think you should also register at Williams-Sonoma OR Pottery Barn since your mom gets a discount there. But if only your mom will be shopping there, then it probably doesn't have a wide enough appeal to include it. Pick whichever you think is more accessible.
Add Crate & Barrel if you like, but remember that you will probably then only get some things from each list and might not get your list as completed as you would if you registered at less places.
We did Macy's, Crate & Barrel, Bed, Bath & Beyond, & MyRegistry.com (some of our guests wanted to gift us champagne and our honeymoon suite). I also set up a site to donate money to a cause.
3. I registered at Anthropologie (frou-frou plates, glassware, bathroom stuff, etc) solely for my shower, and also Crate & Barrel and Target for the wedding.

So I have a delimna with registering. We don't have to register yet, but i'm getting really excited to do it and wanted some people's opinions. How many places did everyone register at? My sister did 4 but the 4th was a store that just sells china. I'm not planning on doing that. Here is a break down of what i'm thinking.
Crate and Barrel -- love them love the store.
Williams Sonoma -- No choice here my mom works there so we will definitley be registering there. Lots of dicounted items! :)
Macy's -- I will only be two years out of college when i get married and my Fiance only 1 year. A lot of our friends are poor. Whil i think crate and barrel has items in every price range some of my friends think it is "outrageous". so i wanted to include another store that has lower priced items and good deals. Also we would like to register for things like a toaster oven and other small appliances that they wouldn't have at the other store. plus we can do our china here and maybe luggage as well.
Pottery Barn-- now normally I would say that if you are doing crate and barrel you don't need Pottery Barn, but again my mom works for Williams Sonoma and PB is in the same company. meaning we get discounts at PB as well. I always love the bedding and towels and other things. Of course my mom can only buy so much so we can't assume everything will be 50% off.
So my dilema is whether or not 4 places is way to many. I think the magazines i read mentinoed registering with at least 3 stores. But maybe I could cut out CB and have enough at the other stores? but i dont' really want to cut out CB. Can you just have a very small registry at one store (PB)? Opinions would be great!
