We’re starting to think about rentals and we need to get some tall cocktail tables, but I’m at a loss for how many to rent. We’ll be having 50 – 60 guests. Is there some magic formula for figuring out how many guests will want to stand at tables and how many are fine just mingling about holding their food/drinks?

Are you having just a cocktail reception or is this just for the cocktail hour? By your subject it seems that it’s just for the hour so I would say if you are not serving items that are complicated to eat (require fork and knife) or dips you really dont need tables at all. We are serving all ‘one bite’ non messy foods and will have only 4 tall tables for ~70 guests. That is the number that my catering manager recommended.

I think it also depends on whether your hors d’oeuvres will be passed. If all you have to do is hold a drink and take an occasional morsel from a tray, you don’t need a table. But it’s really impractical to hold and drink and a plate and eat at the same time – since you have only two hands. If your hors d’oeuvres will be served at stations with plates, I think you need to count on the majority of people wanting to stand at a table or sit down to eat them, if only so that they can set their glass on the table or on the floor.
