Here’s the classification of what’s beyond healthy drinking according to the UK Department of Health:
- Men should drink no more than 21 units of alcohol per week, no more than four units in any one day, and have at least two alcohol-free days a week.
- Women should drink no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, no more than three units in any one day, and have at least two alcohol-free days a week.
One unit of alcohol is in about half a pint of beer, or two thirds of a small glass of wine, or one small pub measure of spirits.
So… I am curious as to what is ‘normal’ for the Bees when it comes to alcohol? I know this varies greatly among age, location in the country, and heck, even what season it is!
I added a poll so that people can feel free to share anonymously if they’d like- since this is a very touchy and personal topic.

I come from a long line of alcoholics (I’ve seen firsthand how bad that turns out) and take medication that makes me very ill if I have more than a sip or two of ale. My FI hates the feeling of being out of control. Usually we’ll have a sip of champagne at New Years (if no cider is around), and on St. Patrick’s he’ll have a pint of Guiness and I’ll have a sip or two of that.

My SO drinks maybe once or twice a month? And when he does drink, it’s one beer. I don’t drink because it makes me feel uncomfortable (really hot, flushed, and headache-y).

I dont drink at all. It makes me sick. Like I’ll get a full blown hangover before I even get drunk.
My fiance will drink a bottle or two every other day.

We drink occasionally. A glass of wine once every couple weeks for me, my husband will have a beer once a week or so.
Neither of us drink to the point of intoxication and we never drive drunk.
ETA: Neither of us have a DUI. If my husband got one, he’d lose his job. It’s a big deal for us.

Neither of us drink. It’s more a personal choice thing than anything else… we just don’t like the taste! Haha. I must say, I didn’t realise until after we started dating how important it is to both of us that we share that lifestyle because I think if one did drink and the other didn’t it would make things awkward & potentially less fun. We’re usually the first to leave, we both appreciate nights in, we’re not night owls and we get our kicks different ways. considering how few non-drinkers there were on the dating website we found each other on, I think we did pretty well!

I have one drink maybe twice a month. My SO drinks more often – probably 3 times a week, 2-4 beers.
I’ll admit that I am a BIT paranoid about him over-drinking. But that might be because I’m naturally wary of substances and the possibility of addiction.

My Dh has studied wines so he’s a bit of the conissieur so he drinks to appreciate the taste. He is not one to over do it.
I’m on a perma diet & can well do without the extra empty calories so I don’t drink at all. Now that I’m on the right combo of meds for my major depression, GAD & panic disorder, I don’t feel the urge to self medicate with alcohol.

I rarely drink, sometimes a glass of wine with dinner or at a cocktail party. He drinks a couple every night when he comes home from work, sometimes heavier when he’s with the guys watching games or at a tournament. We’re good about making arrangements for getting home, when he’s with the guys I drop them off then pick them up or he stays at his one friends house that hosts all the football parties (mostly because it’s an hour away, I’m not going back and forth that long) When I go to a cocktail thing, I usually have one, maybe two and he drops me off and picks me up. If we both go, I don’t drink then, just coffee. Neither of us have had a dui, but all of our friends have. We are well aware of the ramifications and it’s just not worth it.

My SO and I both like a glass of wine with our food, we don’t drink it every day but maybe 3 times a week. We select it carefully to go well with our choice of food and we’re always excited when we do a good job.
My SO also likes beer so he drinks it when he goes out with the guys. Occasionally, he’ll have one at home too, but no more than once a week. When we’re out together, we like to try new cocktails.
Actually, when I think about it, we treat alcohol like food. We like the taste but that doesn’t mean we have to go overboard. We’re not abstaining but we’re well within the healthy norm. And neither of us ever drives drunk, that’s just a big no-no for us.

To @chic_and_fabulous: Interesting topic.
As the UK and North America measure alcohol consumption slightly differently, let me put up the recommended measurements for USA & Canada…
One Serving of Alcohol is equivalent to 0.6 US Oz (18 ml) of Alcohol… this is approx. the amount of alcohol found in:
- 12 Us Oz (350 ml) glass / bottle of beer (5% ABV)
- 5 US Oz (150 ml) glass of wine (12% ABV)
- 1.5 US Oz (44 ml) of 80 proof hard liquor (40% ABV).
Men – 4 Drinks or less per day… and no more than 14 Drinks per Week
Women – 3 Drinks or less per day… and no more than 7 Drinks per Week.
Hope this helps the NA Bees, when looking at their consumption…

My partner and I are both teetotalers. We both think alcohol is gross (neither of us can stand the smell of it, and he’s never even tasted it, although I have).

@chic_and_fabulous: I vary. Some weeks I might drink 3-4 nights; others just once.
However, I almost always binge, and have way more than the recommended number of units. OH probably drinks less than me.
Neither of us has ever driven while drunk; the most OH will drink if he’s driving is 1.5 pints. I won’t drink at all if I’m driving.

@chic_and_fabulous: I don’t drink alchol at all and dh will have maybe 1-2 beers a week… so about 600ml of beer a week at most… Most weeks he doesn’t have any. In the last month he has had more events and as such has probably had 600ml a week for 2 out of the last 4 weeks but generally its maybe one or two beers a month…

He will maybe have a beer with dinner if it’s in the fridge, so 2 or 3 a week at most. I’m usy watchung calories so if you add it up, I have a few a month.
