There will be about 100 guests at our wedding. The reception will be held at a family member’s home. We’ll be having an open bar and I have no idea how much alcohol we should buy! Can I return any unopened alcohol? Anyone encounter this dilema?

Hey! Congrats on your upcoming wedding!
I know that in Ontario you can return unopened booze to the Liquor Store…I would imagine that it is the same anywhere, but to be safe you should double check. I had some friends build their own bar for their wedding and they elected to keep all the unopened booze entertain with at their home. Returning the booze is obviously a great way to recoup some money.
I know that for my reception, (we looked into building our own bar) it really depended on what kind of party you were planning on having. Is it a sit down dinner with wine? Or sort of an open house/cocktail party kind of vibe?
For a cocktail party, we were told that it was basically one drink/per person/per hour. We have a lot of friends that like to…umm…party 🙂 so we bumped it up by one drink extra for the amount of time of the total party. For a sit down dinner with wine, our venue claimed that guests would, on average consume half a bottle of wine each.
Hope this helps a bit. 🙂

I have heard that if you buy from Costco (wine, etc) that you CAN return it if it isn’t opened, obviously! 🙂
