It seems to me that it's fairly commonly accepted to splurge on the bride's engagement and wedding rings, but I'm wondering what most brides are spending for their hubby's band.
My FH has found a gorgeous, $1400 band from Bulgari that he loves, but I'm having trouble coughing up the cash for it knowing that there are other rings that look SO SIMILAR for so much CHEAPER! Of course, when I divide that $1400 by the next 60 years that I plan to be with him, that's only $23 per year. Now if I can only work out a payment plan with Bulgari... ;)
How much are YOU spending for your fiancee's band? Anyone else having a hard time spending a sizeable chunk of their budget (it's 10% of ours!) on one ring?
FI bought my rings in platinum. I considered doing the same for him, but ended up getting a ring in tungsten for $150. I acutally got a discount code from the website www.tungstenworld.com -- had a great experience with them.
I know he spent more on my rings, but I got him what he wanted and I showed him a bunch of options. It doesn't bother me that mine cost a lot more. Actually, when I had him try his on he was worried about getting it dirty and when I told him tungsten was pretty indestructible he decided we should test that out by running it over with the car. Um, no!
We haven't found our rings yet, but mine will be platinum to match the engagement ring we bought for me, and his will be white gold. So we'll definitely spend less on him, but right now, we don't know. I'm hoping we can get both rings for $600, but I don't really think that'll happen...
I suppose this was an epic fail on my part, but we picked out our rings together, and FI insisted on paying for both of them (because he has significantly more income than I do). I said, "No, that's not how it works -- I'm supposed to pay for yours." And he just stared at me for a minute and then said, "Why? That's stupid." So that was that.
Free :) He is going to wear my grandfathers simple gold band and I will wear my grandmothers band on my right hand (from when they got married in 1945)
I ended up getting him a white gold band for about $200 that he sincerely loves. We'll upgrade in a few years... :-)
FI's ring is 4x the cost of my wedding ring! It's not a crazy price, but still. I figured that this was the only ring he really got "excited" over, and I should go for it.
His is coming out to about $500 with a custom design. Mine came to just under $1500 for two diamond bands. He is much more apathetic about rings than I am. He had two simple instructions: Satin and some shine (like a knife edge) and 8mm thick. I found the EXACT ONE on Ebay for $200 in a 7mm. But he wanted 8, so that's what he gets!
I don't know how much it actually costs yet, but I plan to surprise him with a rose gold ring from Cartier Love collection.
However much it costs to get a ring resized -- he's wearing a family ring. Mine isn't astronomical compared to his, I'm just getting a plain whtie gold band.
My FI found a $2100 ring from Tiffany & co that he looooooves. GULP. He really wants platinum, so I think we're going to work with a local jeweler to make something similar, but his ring will still be a big splurge at about $1500-$1800...
His was $975 before tax, and that was on sale. On the higher end, but it is a gorgeous band, with milgrain and brushed white gold detailing. Both of us felt that the rings were one of the most important aspects to splurge on since we'll be wearing them for the next 70 years. I did not want to influence his decision while he was choosing, but the one he picked is the one I was secretly hoping he would choose!
Beach Bride, definitely work with a jeweler. Tiffany & Co's prices are insane and really honestly not worth it imo.
$38! Found it at WalMart, it is Titanium. Got it engraved for $18 so we have $46 invested. If it scratches we can afford to buy him a new one! And in the future we can upgrade if he so chooses. I told him we would get him any ring he wanted but he saw no sense in spending big bucks on it...
I was reading the thread and a little held back to post.. but I got FIs ring on Ebay for $15.. YUP.. $15.. and its perfect actually. We were looking at the jewelers where he purchased both my ering and bands.. and he LOVED one there for $210 but I was insisting I could get it for less (I wasn't sure how much less) but I got his 8MM titanium ring for $15 with shipping LOL.. and when it came in the mail I was sooo nervous it would be horrible but it is great quality and exactly the same ring we saw at the jewelers, we even brought it to Hannoush Jewelers (where mine were purchased) to get engraved and our sales person was blown away that I got this ring for that price.. BY FAR MY BEST SAVE OF THE WHOLE WEDDING !!
Mine doesn't want one, so I will probably just get him a silver band for the ceremony!
The traditional wedding gold band at Tiffanys is going for $675. That will be my max.
My fiance's ring cost about $180. He really liked the feel of titanium so I wasn't going to complain!
I think FI's ring is around $500. It's either tungsten or titanium (can't remember, haven't bought it yet) and has a fiber glass design in it. He fell in love with it at a bridal expo and I haven't seen it yet!!
We were definitely tempted by the low price of titanium rings, but then we read that if they use certain grades (airplane?) of titanium, and you're in an accident, the staff at the hospital might not be able to cut it off your finger. EEP! So we ended up going with white gold, and it was $625
I got my Fi's ring for about $600. It's palladium, which brought the cost down significantly, and looks like this:
My ring is actually part of a wedding set. For the engagement ring and matching band, it was about $1500. Not too shabby! :)
The ring, including shipping, was bid on & purchased for 12.99. I thought what the heck! For that price, it doesn't hurt to check it out. It's completely perfect & just gorgeous!
I'd debated for a long time on what type of metal to get him: he doesn't wear jewelry, just a watch & he's always banging up his watch! I needed something strong that was low maintenance (like him) and wouldn't warp or scratch that easily... so I went with Titanium. He tried it on & said it didn't even feel like he was wearing a ring! It looks so spiffy too lol. No one, besides myself & the hive, will ever know I only paid $13 for it.
I also know what a scatterbrain he can be... so I fully anticipate that he'll lose it by our second anniversary lol. I really see this ring as a right now ring until he gets used to wearing a ring daily. if he keeps it longer than 3 or 4 years- we'll upgrade.
His was $80, and he picked it out. I don't feel bad either, like his was really cheap and mine was really expensive - mine was $60.
My low maintence-I-don't-even-want-a-ring FI ended up being really picky about his ring. Go figure. He/we looked at dozens of rings all of which he rejected for being 'too fancy'. His ring is a platinum thin band with no design for $1100. Why it cost so much I have no idea, but it was the only ring he liked without reservations so I bought it happily. The price still hurts, but it's exactly what he wants!
Haha, right now the plan is that we're both getting Tiffany's bands from the Atlas collection (is it strange to have the same ring as your FI? I think it's kind of sweet...) and those are just over $1k each, I believe. So...expensive, but it's something we budgeted for ahead of time, and we both really do love the rings.
My husband's was a stainless steel $50 ring. He wanted a silver metal and did not want white gold (due to having to get it re-dipped) so we went with the cheapest option - while I got the most expensive (platinum)!
My FI has found a ring he loves that is 1000k in white gold. eek. I showed him tons of rings but he really likes that one so I am going to splurge and get it for him for our engagement anniversary :)
ummmm $60.
His ring has been passed down from his grandfather, so we only had to pay for the intials and resizing the ring.
We were fortunate to be shopping for his band on V-day weekend (1.5 months prior to the wedding). So we found some great deals. Ultimately, we paid $750, approximately. White gold band, with 1/5 carat in princess cut, channel-set diamonds.
2 years ago, my husband and I bought a pair of tungsten rings at tungstenworld.com originally for $179 a piece. This was what we could afford at the time. Now that we are doing better we ended up going back to them and buying a pair with platinum inlays for $749 a piece. I sold our original ones. I kind of wish I kept them but it's too late.
My point is, if you can't afford it, it's ok to come back and upgrade to a pair of rings you want.
This is great. I am getting my FI's band for $850. It is by the same designer as my e-ring, just in white gold instead of platinum. The problem we're having is getting a platinum band for me that's isn't too outrageous and matches my e-ring. The designer, Jeff Cooper, is so specific in his details that it's hard to get a matching one. The matching platinum Jeff Cooper band to my e-ring is $4000+ OUCH.
I attached my FI's band for you guys to check out. What do you think? I love it... he does as well, he was just surprised to like something so different.
His was around $2800 from Tiffany. Unfortunately his fingers are big, so we had to go with the widest band, and about 3 sizes larger than the average man. The ring is ridiculously heavy. He really wanted platinum, and both my rings were from Tiffany, so thats where we went.
After looking at several jewelers including Cartier and Tiffany I got lucky; FI wanted a Tungsten ring. He like the idea that it would not scratch or bend like other metals. We searched around for what seemed like ages until FI found what he wanted. I also used TungstenWorld.com and was very pleased with them (They even do engraving)!
@ MoSnow - I love that ring! It' so unique and yet not flashy.
@ Shakegrl - That's unfortunate that you sold your original rings and now regret it. To me it's not necessarily about price (we could definitly have afforded a platinum ring for him) but more about what your personal taste is. My husband really didn't care for anything flashy or expensive so we got him the cheaper option. I can't imagine trading the ring I placed on my finger on our wedding day for another "better" one..... but that's just me. I think adding an anniversary band would be a great way to upgrade once you're more established instead of getting rid of your original ring.
He went with platinum, 6MM, and we bought it from Brilliant Earth (they use recycled metals, so we felt better about it) and it cost $1400. We looked around and platinum is priced by weight so it was pretty similar across the board. Tiffany's platinum 6mm band was $2400 for the same ring, but the extra is for the brand.
My fiance isn't really into jewelery, and he doesn't think that a ring will be comfortable to wear. So I actually found a great white gold EXTREMELY lightweight "comfort fit" ring at Macy's for $150. My fiance isn't interested in having anything extravagent, so I think he'll like it. I haven't taken him to try it on because our wedding is not until Feb 2010, but I would prefer to have it sooner rather than later!
