Ugh, we have to use a specific beverage provider at our venue....for dinner wine service, we have to use their $28 a bottle wine....which probably cost $10 if we could get it ourselves! If the venue wasn't so important, we'd definitely go the route that you are!
ugh. sorry crayfish! with how much wine my friends drink, i'm really relieved we can buy our own. maybe encourage your guests to stick to beer? :)
@amani- we did a trader joes wine party. we bought a bottle of all the kinds that were in our budget, took the labels off and numbered them. then we had a lot of bp/ family come over. we made everyone a card to rate the wines 1-5, and once they had tried all 10 wines with the tasting cups they earned a glass, so they could drink whatever they liked the best. It was really fun and we went with some I would never have picked (including a 3 buck chuck)! Another good choice was we served food with the same basic flavors as what we are serving so we could make sure it went well with the food.
That's a great idea, vistagirl! I think I'm going to have to steal it :) Do you know if TJs has a good return policy on unopened bottles? I love TJs wine selection but was thinking abt going to BevMo or Costco just b/c I know it's easy to return there.
My TJ's does. and the wine guys were super helpful. they ordered some cases for us of the stuff we liked and they were so easy to deal with!
If they have it- try the white lambrusco. it is sparkling and sweet- it was the most popular at our party and I have had 3 people call me after the party and ask “where can I get a bottle of “c”?” (we lettered the sparkling ones and numbered the others)
Our venue has a corking fee that with us bringing in our own wine is less expensive than their least expensive wine. You might check and see if they have a corking fee.
for champagne, we are using charles de fere blanc de blancs and rose. ive had it before, it's delicious and has a 90 pt rating from one of the wine mags. even better - it's $12.99 a bottle. woah!!!
One of the grocery stores here is closing so I was able to get all of our wine and sparkling wine at 50% off! :) The bottles were originally in the $10 range, so I got them all for around $5 each.
I am planning on doing the tasting party idea, much like Vista. I hadn't considered taking off the labels, but I'll do that. The Big Lots down the street from me sells wine (weird, huh?) usually around $2 or $3 a bottle, so I'm going to sneak one or two of those in there to see if they get approval. It would be a nice savings if a cheap wine was approved of.
We have to use our venue's wine provider as well... 18 dollars a bottle. :(
Our TJs accepts returns too. Good to know if anyone else is thinking about getting wine/booze from there!

Trader Joes has some decent $5-6 bottles, but maybe I'd find better deals at BevMo or Costco?
