Hi Bees,
Have this as a poll if anyone would like to stay anonymous. How much credit card debt do you (and your FI/DH collectively) have? Just wondering if FI and I are waaaaay off the mark or if we look pretty good in comparison to other bees.
Please just comment on CREDIT CARD debt alone, not school loans, car loans, etc.
i have two credit cards, but they both have low limits, right now i don't have anything on either credit card though. DH HATES credit cards and will never get one. lol, so he doesn't have any. he doesn't like that i have credit cards either, but i do like to have them around in case of an emergency.
@Future Mrs. Martin: & @NYE Gal: Wow, good for you girls!
@rlsh86: Same here, except we have had emergencies. I have 1 card and FI has 2, and they all have at least $800-$1000 on them. But at least I can feel a bit better knowing that we used them for good reason, and it's not like I just went on a shopping spree!
I have NO credit card debt, however I picked $0-$1000 because of DH. He has a few hundred bucks he owes. (Around $500-$1000 mark.)
I believe in being prepared, you never know what might happen! It's good to know that if i'm ever in a situation where i need my credit card, i can have it! but i too pride that i just don't use it on some shopping spree. :). this is a good choice.
I picked 0-$1000 because although right now I've got about $500 on one, it will be paid off when the statement comes around. I always pay off my credit cards every month.

Ugh! I was trying to correct 'DH' to 'FI' and I accidentally made a double post.
Sowwy!
I pay off my credit cards every month and am careful not to charge anything I cannot afford.
I would be interested to see the poll change to $0 then $1-1000. The usefulness of this survey to me at least is seeing how many people actually carry debt and then the dollar amount.
Also, my reply to the OP: $0. I have lovely high student loan payments, no need to add credit card debt to the mess!
I had some issues with my credit card in college, so after I paid it off, I cancelled it. I just use my debit card. I'm still in a position where my parents will loan me money until I get paid the next week if something comes up, though. I might get one and keep it just for emergencies once FI and I are married.
In the meantime, not having one definitely motivates me to save money for those 'just in case' scenarios :).
I'm jealous of all you non-debt girls. We only have about $3500 on our cards, but it still weighs on my mind heavily. We were hit with about $20,000 worth of vet bills for our dog, so we used a lot of our savings and put the rest on the cards. We've also only been out of college a year or two, so we're in our entry-level $35-$40k a year jobs, so it's been tough to pay them off. Most of our money has been filtered towards wedding things now, but I really just want to clear out that debt (we have enough other debt with school loans, cars, soon to be a mortgage!) so I really just want it gone!
We don't have any debt besides our house, and my car.
ETA: My FH did have around $4,500 worth until we bought our house a year ago. With the first time homebuyers tax credit he paid it off, and hasn't used it since. I used to have a steady $1,000 always on it, but got into trouble and just canceled them all after paying them off.
None whatsoever. The first thing my parents taught me when I got a credit card was never to carry a balance.
None. I don't spend money I don't have. I'd borrow from my parents before we had to go in debt for something.
@MIssMaine, can you transfer that balance for your dog's vet bills to a PetCare type card? I vaguely remember my vet offering a low interest credit card specifically for vet bills. It might be better than what you have. I'd probably pick up a second job to pay that off...that's a chunk to pay off on entry level pay and it'll just keep growing =(
No credit card debt. I was quite naughty with credit cards in my early 20’s and had to work extremely hard to rehab my credit, now that its good, I will not screw it up again!!! I use credit cards, but monitor online what I’m spending, and always pay it off in full at the end of the month.
We have no credit card debt. My DH and I use our credit card for EVERYTHING (I bought $2 windshield washer fluid with mine yesterday), but we pay it off every month and collect the rewards points. They paid for our honeymoon!
It would probably drive me crazy to pay finance charges every month. One of my friends buys a ton of stuff on sale, but uses his credit card and carries a balance. I've tried numerous times to explain to him how much he actually ends up paying for those purchases over the long run with interest and fees, but he still doesn't get it.
I don't have any either. Still owe like $6k on student loans though.
@MrsMaine: Wow! $20K for a vet bill, yikes! As someone with 6 animals that hits home. I'm not too sure what we'd do in that situation! (probably have cc debt as well!)
None. We put everything we can on our CC and pay it off every month. Then we use the points towards flights since we fly all the time.
@MrsMaine:we had a similar vet bill emergency. do you have carecredit? if not, i would look into transferring your vet balance to that. it's a credit card only for vets/doctors/etc, and they have a lot of no-interest offers where you can choose the number of months...i think they even go up to 48 months, but the interest rate if you don't pay it off is astronomical for that.
I owe about $400 on my credit card. Totally do-able once I get a job. I can't wait to get it paid off. It annoys me every month I look at my statement.
I owe about $5,000 in student loans as well.
I might have about $30 on my credit card. I only use it to buy gas because I earn points.
The only debt I have is my car.
I have about $1,500 left to pay, but its on a no interest card for the next 10 months so I am planning to have it paid off before the interest rate skyrockets. I haven't actually used a credit card in years, but its taken me a long time to get my debt down so I only keep the cards for emergencies.
None. We both use our cards for the points but then pay them off every month. Only exception is sometimes if I buy something bigger, or like around christmas. I might take like 1-2 mo to pay it off. But that is pretty rare.
None! I just use my cards to get points - if I'm going to spend the money anyway I might as well get something for it!
FI and I have no debt of any kind.
We pay our credit cards off every month, I own my car outright, neither of us have student loans, and we rent (so no mortgage).
My parents always taught me never to spend more than I had and that a credit card was to be treated like a debit card but you had 30 days to pay and you get airline miles.
I've had to pull money out of savings to pay my cc bill sometimes, but I have never carried a balance.
@kitzy: Thanks for the info. I'll definitely look into it. I know that at the time it happened we weren't approved for one of them because our dog's problem was caused by a genetic defect. But I'll try and see if I can do it now and transfer it over. The interest is ridiculous on the card I have now, so hopefully it will help out a lot! Thanks again!
I used to hover around $1,000 of CC debt while I was in law school and lived on student loans. But now I pay it off every month as does my BF. He puts everything on his card to get points so he has a large balance at the end of the month, but he pays it off. We have more than enough in student loans between the 2 of us to worry about having to pay off credit cards too.
Wow Im surprised at the number of people with no debt - thats awesome! And Im jealous. In our senior year of college DH and I had no help for anything except tuition. I was only working a few hours a week as a nanny and not making much. DH was working at BOA as a teller as much as possible. Unfortunately it was at a point where we had to buy groceries every week with our credit card. Even gas went on the credit card because we literally could not afford anything. On top of that we also had 2 cats and a dog with lots of vet bills and then our dog getting into several fights and requiring emergency surgery did not help either. We racked up quite a bit of debt this way but we have always paid more than the minimum on our credit cards every month and have since frozen our credit cards - quite literally they are in a plastic cup, in ice, in our freezer. We were somewhat wreckless before but in the past year we have really buckled down and have not accrued any additional debt.
