Ours cost around $5K for a 1 week stay in Cabo. That includes airfare, hotel with a room upgrade, food and drinks for the entire week. We bought a few small gifts, but other than that no other spending.
If your budget is tight, you might want to consider a cruise or a local honeymoon. There are a ton of cruise specials that make it a very affordable vacation. And if you stay local you don't have to fly.
Ours cost about $4600. I think cruises definitely are a more cost friendly way to go they are usually well under $1000 per person.
My honeymoon includes a week Monday to Monday stay at Secrets resort in Jamaica..all inclusive..and airfair from Philadelphia to jamaica.
We spent 8k (and used miles for our flights) but tons of people have planned cheaper honeymoons around here. I'd come up with a budget and plan from there. Staying local will save you a ton of $.
This depends on where you want to go and for how long. You can find a place to go for whatever budget you and your FI are comfortable spending.
I would say what we spent on our honeymoon definitely wasn't "normal". We're spending 12k on flight, hotel, and activities for 4 days on each Moorea and Bora Bora. We haven't gone yet so I don't have the total tally for the trip after food and stuff.
We're looking into a Disney honeymoon during Christmas/New Year's after our wedding (August is a terrible time to go to Disney World, so we figured later during the holidays would be a lot nicer hehe). I want to stay at Animal Kingdom, and with the cost of the tickets + dining options we're looking at around $5-6k I suppose.
Ours was about $9K, including the first two nights, which we spent at a downtown hotel in the city closest to our wedding/reception venue and out of which we flew to our eight-day, seven-night, stay at a Caribbean resort. There are many cheaper options -- even in the Caribbean. However, for my honeymoon, I really wanted to stay at an uncrowded, high-end resort where the rooms and grounds were luxurious, the dining was fabulous and the beaches were beautiful.
Deals are there but you have to look for them. If you posted your budget and your honeymoon wishlist people could probably help you look.
As for us, we spent about $3,500 to go to Kauai for 1 week. The airfare/car rental/resort (Westin Princeville) was $2500 and we spent about another $1,000 there on food, excursions, gas, etc.
I thought that was pretty cheap for Hawaii but the only way I found that deal was that I knew exactly what I wanted and I checked travelocity every day to see what the deal was. It was about 3,200 usually but for ONE day it dropped down to 2500 and i snapped it up.
We don't really have a budget, but we're not paying for our own wedding, so I'm really comfortable with whatever. We're looking into Sandals St. Lucia (not sure which resort yet) and figured it would be around $4000-5000 all inclusive including airfare. I think that's pretty reasonable.
We went to Jamaica for a week at an all inclusive resort (Jewel Dunn's River in Ocho Rios). It was around $4400 total with direct flights. We really didn't spend a whole lot of money once we were there, maybe about $400 between the two of us :)
Ours is probably going to cost about $7,000 without airfare. I know it's a lot of money, but the honeymoon is what I'm looking forward to the most!
We spent more than we spend on a typical trip. I think the trip itself (8 days in Anguilla) cost around $6000. Then we probably spent another $1500 on food, activities, drinks, etc. But that was eating out at nice restaurants pretty much every night.
There's definitely ways to save money.
I'm going to Sandals St. Lucia! But we're spending a fairly big amount - about $10k. And that's with 5 nights at a butler level room at Sandals, and 4 nights at a boutique hotel in Barbados. But our Sandals room is super pricey, they have much more reasonable options than what we picked out.
We're planning to spend around $13K for a 16 day trip to Switzerland. But, the honeymoon is more important to us than the wedding, so we've budgeted more for it than for the wedding. Also, Switzerland is an expensive country in the best of times and these days the exchange rate makes it extra expensive.
Maybe you can use my splurge to make your FI feel better about how much you will spend!
Ours was about $4500 after you factor in the cost of the trip, spending money, passport fees, etc. We took a 7 day cruise to Bermuda and we were in port for 3 full days...
Grand total: $4560 give or take a few bucks.
We did Sandals St. Lucia for 10 days on a $5k budget! I think we spent about $300 for extras like para sailing and touring the island and a few small items in the gift shop. For us the key was not getting a fancy room as we were more interested in spending our time in the pools or on the beach than waiting on room service. As well, book in advance, we booked 9 months out and never saw a lower price. We even got an upgrade to an ocean view since we had joined the Sandals club on a prior trip. I wrote a review on teh 3 ressorts back in 2010, search for it if you want my hopefully unbiased report of each ressort.
We went to Savannah, GA. Flights were just under $1000 each person (we're flying from western Canada) hotel was about $1100 for 6 nights, and then spending money! I'd say we spent about $4500 (golf included for my husband, I shopped!)
Where are you hoping to go? We've traveled to many other places, so I can give you some other ideas too!
We are spending around $5000 for a family-moon (Mr. LK, teen LK, and I). It's a 7 day Caribbean cruise on one of the huge Royal Caribbean ships during spring break 2012. We're really excited for it!
It looks like we are going to be spending around $4500 for 7 nights in Belize. At first we were going to do Montreal since we could drive and save on airfare, but that trip looked like it was going to end up being $3500, so we said screw it we are going to Central America lol.
You can do lots of things without paying so much money. You can go on a cruise not that I am plugging them but carnival has very good prices and the food is included. You just have to get airfare. I would do all inclusive because you don't have to worry about spending budgeting money for food. Good luck.
Our vacation costs about $6k for 15 days to Paris, Venice, Florence, and Rome. That include flight to Paris and home, hotels and train rides within Italy. Doesn't include flight from Paris to Venice, tickets for museums, food and shopping trip.
We are spending 10k for a hawaii honeymoon. we are wayyyy splurging though. this includes 6 nights on the big island, 1 night in waikiki, and 6 nights in the north shore of oahu (in a cottage on the ocean!). this also includes rental car and first class flight. god i can't wait!!!
@Lemma: We were thinking of going to Switzerland as well! We were thinking 10-14 days. Would you mind sharing the time of year you plan to go and some of the places you are planning to stay?
We are thinking of going in the winter and doing some skiing. Any tips you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
We are going to Costa Rica for 12 days. We used points for our airfare and my FI works for Starwood Hotels so we are extremely lucky that we get an employee rate. We are staying at the Westin Playa Conchal which is all-inclusive for $3K. We leave in 2 weeks :)
We spent about 9K for three weeks in Ireland. We planned the trip ourselves and had a few budget busters, but overall had a relatively inexpensive trip for the amount of time we spent away (more info here).
WE spent around 8K and we spent a week in Italy and a week in Greece. It was actually pretty cheap considering it included roundtrip airfare between NY, Italy and Greece. And we rented cars in both countries. You can def spend less though. It really depends where you want to go and for how long.
We took a 5 day cruise, three ports and three excursions. All things told, we spent just about $2500-- and that includes extra shopping. It was perfect for us!
We're spending about...1k. We decided to get a cabin in the mountains for a few days since it will be winter. We'll go to a resort in FL or on a cruise in July or November when it's warm, and we're looking between 2k for a resort in November to 4k for a cruise in July.
Wow I feel better about our honeymoon after reading these. We got back from our near week in Vegas a few days ago: roundtrip airfare and 4 nights at a fancy hotel cost us about $1200 before spending money/meals/etc.
We're planning a big European trip for our first anniversary, though, and I'm sure that one will be a whopper price-wise.
We stayed in my in-laws' swanky timeshare and they paid for my husband's flight as a birthday gift, so we only had to pay for my ticket ($600), the rental car ($250ish?), and food (a lot). It was pretty affordable. We just sat around eating and having sex and watching movies. LOL.
We are going to two different all inclusive resorts in Jamaica and staying for seven nights. I think it's costing around 6K, some of it being paid for by my FI's family, the rest by us. We are using airline miles to get free flights. We splurged a little on the rooms, but I'm super excited.
Try applevacations.com. They have phenomenal deals right now and their service is great. ie. $1,200pp 7 days at the highest rated hotel in riviera maya. all-inclusive including the airfare. best of luck.
We spent $6000 on an allinclusivve trip for 8 days to Secrets Maroma Beach in the Mayan Riviera,Mexico. It was expensive but we upgraded to the honeymoon package but it was totally worth it. In comparison, we also had a great vacation the year before to Varadero Cuba to one of the top rated resorts and it only cost us $3500 all together, do there are cheaper trips available.
We've spent £3600 / $5600 ish on flights and accomodation - 5 nights NYC and 5 nights Las Vegas, taxes included but no food or entertainment! It's the most expensive holiday i've booked but it's about the only places the 2 of us have never been so it's a treat!!

My fiance is totally freaking out about the cost of honeymoons. What price range do you find "normal" for a honeymoon? What did you pay or what will you be paying?
