i just had my bms dress altered a few days ago. my friend ordered ours from netbride, bill levkoff and i got a size up. to take it in and hem it up about 3 inches (its a long dress), it cost me $50. i have NO clue if this is a lot or a little...but in planning my own wedding, i am too tired to go shopping around for the best price. id be curious to know the responses to this post. hope this helps =)
I had a dress altered for a wedding I was in last May. It needed to be hemmed in the front quite a bit (I'm only 5'1"), the sides taken in (which included reattaching the zipper when that was done), and the straps shortened. It cost me about $100 at a local alterations place.

I'm ordering mine from netbrides.com too. They seem to be (and judging all of you who are ordering from them too) the best option. No taxes, low shipping fees, fair price for dresses. The Alexia bridesmaid dress that my friend, the bride chose...much much cheaper than the original David's Bridal dress she picked. Plus, so far, customer service is pretty helpful at answering questions..
I haven't ordered it yet, but since it takes a while (i think it was 11-16 weeks and with the wedding in August) I should probably do it soon. I'm hoping it to be around $50 or less.
ANYWAY....I have the same question regarding alterations in the SF/Bay Area region.
I unfortunately had to shell out about $100 in alterations on a bridesmaid dress from a year ago. The dress had a train on it but no bustle, so she had to put one in as well as hem it and take it in.
yikes! so far the $50 post sounded the best. hehe. Yea, I went with netbride b/c it was cheaper than the other online sites I found.
I got the BM dresses for only $100. It would definately stink to pay another 100 just for alterations!

i'm not help since i'm in cali, but i got mine hemmed and taken in a little for $30 at a little shop in town [i had a bridesmaid dress made there for another wedding i was in a few years ago]. it just depends on where you go.
Last year I got a BM dress taken in at the bust and hemmed at the bottom for $40 (she wanted $45-50, but we were getting FI's suit altered at the same time so I bargained her down). This year I'm getting a
BM dress hemmed for $30 (she wanted $35). I'm in Louisville. One of the other BMs, in Baltimore, is getting her dress taken in at the bust and hemmed for $40-45.
Where in NJ are you? I have a couple central NJ recommendations.
$75 in nyc. we are getting in-house alterations and the place caps the cost at $75, no matter what needs to get done (which we thought was nice).
i'm also a BM in another wedding (NJ) and for in-house alterations, we were quoted an "average" of $100. the cost depends on what needs to get done but she rattled off a few things, like hem is $50, adding cups is $30.

I'm ordering my After Six BM Dresses from Netbride.com.
All the girls were kinda in between sizes so they ordered up.
Now the question is -- can anyone recommend someone in the NJ area?
AND how much should we expect to pay? Any tips/advice for me?
