The FI, parents and I all agree that we want a band instead of a DJ for the reception. I’m trying to come up with a budget for the whole wedding but I honestly have no idea how much bands cost. Not even a ballpark figure. We do know that it’s one of the most important elements for us so we’ll make it happen even if we have to sacrifice elsewhere.
But I’m just wondering how much everyone paid for their band and how many hours of music that included? Thanks Bees.

Our wedding is in NY, but I’m guessing LA prices will be similar.
From what I have researched, musicians in a band cost about $1k each for a 4 hour set. That was no matter where we looked- a 7 piece cost $7k, 10 pieces were 10k. Now to me that just wasn’t possible. But we really really wanted a band and I was already stretched thin on budget.
We ended up booking a 3 piece for 3k. It’s not necessarily how many pieces there are in the band, even though its awesome to have multiple singers and brass and keyboards. The band we found was originally a bar cover band, so they have literally played everything we could think of. Their list was fantastic, even getting some niche music that most bands wouldn’t play (alternative rock, grunge). The 5-10 piece bands we looked at were very professional, but almost too much so. There was no passion in the music, but they were playing it perfectly. These are just some things to think about as you look.

i was first told bands in the dc area would run us 5-10K for the reception. everyone (FI, parents, his parents) really wanted a band but i didn’t want to allocate that much of our budget to it. i ended up finding a band that is playing our 4 hour reception, plus a keyboardist for the ceremony and a keyboard and a saxophone for the cocktail hour all for 3K. much easier to swallow for me than 5-10K. the most important thing i found when looking for less expensive bands is to find bands that don’t book through a booking/talent agent. those agencies charge a 15-20% fee on top of the band’s fee. our band books both independently and through a booking agent (you just have to be savvy enough to find them on your own), our same package through the booking agent would have been 5K.

I think ours was just under $12K. It was an 11 piece band, totally customized our entire wedding learning new songs and provided cocktail hour music.

Wow! One of FH’s friends is in a band, so we had them an they gave us a great deal. We had a six piece band, they played for four hours with only one short break, and only charge us $500.

Our band will be $2100 for 3 hours and it’s an 8 piece band. This was a reach for my budget but a great deal for the number of pieces! They’re also adding on a trio to play for an hour at cocktail hour for $150 ($50 a piece).

Our band is $1700, 4.5 hours, 6-piece band. South Carolina. I’m sure you are looking at alot more in LA. Interesting to see how everyone’s prices are varying though!

Wow thanks for all the feedback and advice ladies. That is really a big range so I guess I’m sort of back to square one of not knowing how much to budget for it. haha but at least i know that it can be negotiated depending on the size, (I didn’t even think about that before).
Seriously I don’t know how I would plan this wedding without all the great advice I get on here.

I would look into any non-union bands as they will generally charge less (ie the union pay I believe is over 150 per hour at min while we are paying 2000 for 19+manager for 4 hours as they are non-union)

Also a great resource for me was Gigmasters (http://www.gigmasters.com)–you are able to get free quotes, and can contact the bands in your price range, then depending on their quote, you can choose to contact them or not!

$7400 for 7 pieces. They were amazing and worth every penny.

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to hire a band. After doing some research on 4-6 peice bands, I found out that the average range was $3500-$6500.
Bands are EXPENSIVE, but I think its SOOOO worth it!! It took me a while to finally pick a band, but I can’t wait to have them play at my wedding!!

We are in NJ and we’re paying $9,000 for a 8 piece band and 2 pieces for the ceremony and cocktail hour.
