I am trying to find a decent priced photographer here in AKRON OHIO. I have no idea what to look for or how to know if I am paying too much. I would want pre ceremony, ceremony, and reception pics done. I have called a few places and they START at $2,000 just for 3 hours.
So if any of you ladies could tell me how to go about this or have any advice on how I could save money on pictures I would be thankful.
$2000 for 3 hr is on the high end. That guy must have very good pics or otherwise he's overcharging.
I paid $7000 for all day, and our photographer has won awards all over the place, published numerous times, and teaches wedding photography seminars all over the planet.
Ours was $2600 for 2 photographers at 10 hours, and we received a $600 photo credit. I found ours at a wedding show and loved their pictures. Maybe since it was a husband/wife duo that own their own studio, they were less expensive?
i got really really lucky, i have a friend/old coworker who is an amazing photog. she is charging me $565 for 4 hours/2 photographers and prints. The cheapest i found through local vendors ran around $1800 for a simple package and limited coverage.
Mine is charging $3000 for 9 hours of coverage with 2 photogs
I paid $5,000 for 2 photographers for an unlimited amount of time. That included them arriving at the salon as we were getting ready and being the last to leave with my husband and me.
We also received a $400 print credit, a coffee table book of every proof, a DVD with the rights to all 700 of our photos, and our album.
I got a steal with $500 for a full day (unlimited) and an engagement session. She's new to the area though.
If photography isn't a huge priority to you and you're trying to save money, you could check craigslist. A lot of people trying to build their portfolio post there.
Most of the photographers we looked at were $3000 + without prints! We managed to find someone for $1,200. I think we get 7 hours... We don't get any prints, but we get CDs with all the pictures that we then have rights to do whatever we want with. And the pics don't have any photographers markings or anything. He did a friend's wedding and the pictures were awesome. Oh - and we get a free engagement session.
I would say just keep looking... talk to friends, look online, check out wedding events... there has got to be someone in your area who charges less!
Every area is going to be different. In Oregon, the cost of living isn't as high (or low) as other areas. So when I say the average pro photographer costs around $1200-$2000, that's this area. In a different part of Oregon, $2000 could be the lowest. The cost of living in NYC is probably at least double than here, so likely, the cost for photography is more than here. I'm not sure about Ohio.
Ask photographers if they can work within your budget. Sometimes you can cut out extras like albums & other things, which should lower the price. Photography is usually one of those "you get what you pay for" scenarios. So be careful with people who give you a really low price! However, more $$ doesn't always mean better.
Additional money savers: have your wedding on a Friday or Sunday if you can. Usually venues will be cheaper & sometimes photogs will charge less. I don't change pricing depending on the day, but I always try to work with someone.
We are going to be using a friend who does professional photography. She is charging us $1425 for engagement session (last 3 hours), 8 hrs on wedding day, and a day after session with just me and the groom. We do not have to pay for prints, as she will give us a CD with all of the photos. She has great quality work!
We're paying $1,100.
That includes 8 hours, rights to the pictures, a high res CD, travel costs (she lives a state away), and a $25 print credit.
Her pictures are stunning.
I'm paying $2500 for 2 photographers and 7 hours of day-of coverage, plus a one-hour engagement shoot and all photos in high resolution on CD with full reproduction rights.
In Chicago, I am paying $2800 for 2 photographers for 12 hours. This includes all rights to all pictures in color and black and white and an engagement session with rights to all of those pictures in black and white. I'm pretty happy with that.
We paid $1400 for full day coverage. She normally charges $1900, but had a promotion for $500 off if you booked in August. To be honest, she wasn't our top pick, but still takes amazing photos, and was within our price range. All the ones I LOVED were upwards of $5000 a day, which is definitely out of reach for us.
$2750
4 hour engagement session
10 hour day of
rights to engagment/wedding day pics on cd/dvd with edits
20 page photo guestbook
2 photogs
I paid $4000 for 8 hours (which includes a 2 hour trash the dress session) in Costa Rica. I think it's a little on the high side for the location but I loved her pictures.
Ours was $2400 for an engagement session, bridal session, unlimited coverage on the day of (ended up being about 14 hours), a photo guest book (which is gorgeous!), and all our pictures on DVDs with rights.
We paid $880 for 2 photographers and all day coverage (10+ hours). Between the 2 photographers they were able to get over 3,000 photos, some of which the main photographer will edit. We will receive all photos on a disk so we can print what we choose. But we also got 100 thank you photo cards and a bunch of other prints, including a 16 x 20 & photobook. I don't know much about the 2nd photographer, but our main photographer is amazing. She is just starting out her business from a hobby and we found her on Craigslist.
@soon2Bmrs.B: I just realized that it might be helpful to have a link to my photographers blog just so you could get an idea of what I am paying for!

$4000 for 8 hours (incl 2 hour trash the dress)
We paid $5K for eight hours, two shooters and all our photos, edited, on a DVD with reproduction rights. This also included tax and a travel fee. Our photographer was more high-end and has been published a lot in bridal magazines and such.
Pricing will depend greatly on your taste. My personal opinion is, unless the photog is just starting out and offering services really cheap just to gain experience and a portfolio, a good photographer will be at least $2K. But I'm also a photographer snob, so ... :)
We're situated in Columbus and my photographer will be $1350 for up to 12 hours of coverage, an engagement session, all images on a disc and a coffee table album. We definitely got her a good deal on her! I actually found her through the The Knot Columbus, Ohio community board randomly one day. I'm sure you can find other options to consider as well :-). You can try searching here in the Northeast Ohio The Knot community board to get suggestions from brides in the same area (http://forums.theknot.com/Sites/theknot/Pages/Main.aspx/local-wedding-boards_ohio-northeast) or check out WeddingWire and you can put in your zipcode and they'll search for all sorts of vendors near that zipcode. Hope this helps! Good luck!
We paid $1440 in middle of nowhere Georgia (1.5 hrs outside of Atlanta)
-2 photographers
-8+ hours
-rights to all our photos
-CDs with all proofs on them with some edited
$4300 for:
NE Florida area.
We're paying $1175 for six hours, travel expenses, an engagement session, and our disks with copyrights.
We are paying $900 for a local photographer who specializes in photojournalism (which is exactly what we wanted). His fee includes 8 hours of coverage, disk with all photos fully edited, complete rights to our photos after the wedding with a signed release from him as well as an online password-protected gallery for our guests to view.
@Goldilocks1107: Who was your photographer? It sounds like you just described our photographer...wondering if it's the same?
$2500 for 2 shooters at 6 hours and I can add more time at $150 an hour. E-session included with DVD of all pics that I can print up to 8x10 anywhere I want. She is amazing and I have worked with her before and she started at a child photog so she will work really well with our little guy who will be three and is impossible to get a decent photo of.
Ours will be around $850. That's for our e-pics, bridals, rehearsal dinner and 8 hours on wedding day. We got a great deal, and she's a great photographer!
When we were married we paid 2000 dollars for seven hours and a 300 dollar print credit.
@soon2Bmrs.B: I have a good friend who is a very gifted photographer. He does it part-time and lives in Stow. I don't know what he would charge, but if you're interested, send me a message and I'll talk with him about it.
Here's his flickr address: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ryancrichards . He just recently posted some beautiful bridals he took for his sister.
We're paying $3,000 for our photographer who'll be there all day (including his travel fees etc.), plus give us an engagement shoot. We're doing the engagement shoot near his studio in New Hampshire and he'll be in charge of finding gorgeous backdrops for that, and then he'll travel down our way to the Boston area for the wedding itself.
He's sort of family, so he's giving us a great deal on the travel stuff and staying with family so we don't need to pay for a hotel room.
Lisa Rice Photography is out of Columbus and is AMAZING! Her packages are very resonable. Check her out! She did our engagement pictures, my budoir shoot and our wedding.
Mine is $1890 (we got a 10% discount) for engagements out of town, all day coverage on wedding day by 2 photographers, an album, proofing galleries, and a high res disc w/ full printing rights of all photos.
So, $2000 for 3 hours seems way overpriced.
We paid $400 for three hours of coverage, a disk of the edited images, and reproduction rights. We found the photographer on Craigslist, but were also able to see examples of his work on his own website.
For 6 hours including the album i'm paying £900 or $1413 in American money.
We're paying 2300 for 2 engagement photo sessions, all day coverage, and all our edited photos on a disk.
Ours cost $3300 (not including tax) which included a 2 hour engagement shoot with 2 photographers and a lighting assistant, 8 hour coverage for the wedding with the same team, a DVD with all the high res images and a $300 print credit. It's on the higher end for the area, but it was one thing I was comfortable splurging on :)
