on your FI/ boyfriend/ husband for Christmas this year?

I was at work today and trying to figure out how much I'm spending this year, and then I was curious as to what was the average is. My friend is spending about $150, another is spending about $100, and I'm spending about $225 (um, I really like buying presents?).

Before we had our son and we were both working, I spent SO much money on him! Probably at least $300 every year! Now, I've spent about $100 on him this year.

this is kind of a silly question. Why does it matter how much you spend? Thats not really the point of giving gifts.

... saldag, I realize the monetary value isn't important and that it's not the point of giving gifts. I was just curious because we all seemed to be in the same range, so I was wondering if that was normal across the board. I was trying to get a better sample. Law of averages are something that I find really interesting and economics and money plays into that.

So far? Zero dollars and zero cents. :p

But in all reality, we're doing the $50 rule/contest again this year. Both of us always cheat, but it's a fun game to play.

I know it doesn't matter how much you spend, but people are always curious on what is spent whether it be holidays or weddings. I love to see the different price ranges. I think it's interesting and it makes me be like damn, wish I had that kind of money! Lol

We usually spend more, but since we have so much house stuff to buy lately, we have a $100 limit for each other and that's what I'm spending on my hubby pre-tax :)

OOOH! I didn't think about that tax loophole. Last year I just had "my parents" give him a lot of stuff. He had "the cat" give me extra stuff.

Hahaha, love the gifts from the pets.  I used to do that where I had my dog "give" him presents, now the only loophole I have is pre-tax, lol.

We are being pretty cheap this year. Mr. G is getting a Save the Ta Tas mug (by request!), which, with shipping, ended up being $20.

He asked me what I wanted and I replied: Do the dishes and take my trash out on New Year's eve, and don't snore if humanly possible.

    Even trade.

About $175... I might call them engagement gifts since we aren't technically doing gifts. We decided a few years ago that instead of presents we'd book a mini-trip somewhere. This year we're going to our fav local resort for 3 nights!

I can't WAIT until the farthest distance between us is the other side of the bed! LDRs are so expensive... the cost of his flight here would have made for a sweet trip if we were together locally. I hate paying for stupid flights back & forth.

No christmas present this year.  We are donating Christmas present money that we normally spend on each other to a local food bank instead.

@mspuppyjacks: that is fabulous!  We are buying presents for each other, but a $100 limit and we've already purchased presents for the Adopt-a-Family program I organized at work for two families ($500 - about $250 each family).  Initially we said we'd cap our Xmas gifts at $300, but then I added the Adopt-a-Family to the equation and we agreed to limit our own gifts to no more than $100 and $500 for charity.  This is our first Xmas together.

    Hey Bees!!

We put a cap on our spending limit this year at $100.

Buuuut, I like the idea of having our dog give him a gift too so I can get him that extra something I know he'd really appreciate.  Thanks for the idea!

    Happy Shopping! Laughing

We have a budget this year of $100.  I ended up spending $109 but whatever.  Close enough.

And like soon2bewed, our "cats" got him a present that cost $30.  Hehe ;o)

Because we're paying for the full wedding, moving at the end of the month and need to furniture the entire new place we opted to not do gifts for each other this year.

That being said, I got FI one of those gift basket type things (on sale for like $8!) of different types/colors of unpopped popcorn.  To help save for the wedding, he's been packing his lunch every day, and popcorn is one of his favorite snacks to take.  He works on the trading floor with a bunch of type-A alpha males that give him a hard time about packing a lunch.  I figured this was a small way to show him I appreciate all the sacrifices he's been making=)

I expect to spend around $400, mostly on stuff that he *needs* and has been procrastinating on buying for himself (most notably a decent winter coat).

I have NO IDEA, something not so expensive maybe about 100.00 or so....I don't even know what to get him yet. His b-day is on Saturday Dec 12th so I ordered him a new Blackberry Curve, I gave him my upgrade since I already have a new phone and we have a phone account together we can do that deal =).

I'm so glad to hear all of your responses. We have a $150 limit, which is the same as every other year we've been together. One of our couple friends was talking about a $1000 limit and it was making me feel bad lol... they don't make any more money than we do, but I guess they are a little more extravagent?

We cheat, and buy a BIG gift for both of us, we're both sick of trying to figure out a thoughtful gift for each other during the holidaze. The economy must have hit us this year because we bought an $80 bed frame, (it was on clearance,) and last year we bought the Wii. Nice to get a good deal though!

I'm spending more than I typically do because I'm pretty sure I'm getting a new DSLR and I don't want his presents to look gimpy in comparison.

Also, I used gift cards leftover from the wedding and bought remaining things off our registries, wrapped them up and put To: The Newlyweds, From: Santa and put them under the tree.  He doesn't know what they are, so it was kind of fun!  Plus they were things we needed/wanted and didn't really cost us any money!!

We try to put a cap of $150 on the pressies, but we both usually go over that. I've finished my shopping for him for this year and it came to about $220.

I think I've spent around $300 so far but I'm a selfish gift giver......every year I get him and 'experience' gift.  This year I got a hotel room near the casino and tickets to a favorite concert.  Not to be totally selfish I also bought him new Nikes and a few other things he asked for.  I could spend a little more on him this year because I got great bargains on all my little girl's asked for presents!  I love bargains.....

We decided a while back that we'd only get each other our wedding bands for Christmas.  But now we've each seen our present because we had to pick them out ourselves so its a little bit sad.  My ring is great, but a little surprise would be nice!  I'm hoping to convince him that we should at least do stockings too!

    @crebre- lol

I am spending about $175 total probably. We said we were going to cut back this year... but I failed. Hopefully he did not haha. But I got really good deals on stuff!

DJ Hero (don't judge... he really wanted it haha)- $99

Dexter season 3 blu ray- $34

    Goodfellas blu ray- $10

And I'm making him a quilt... I have everything I need for it except backing which I'm figuring will be around $25ish.

We are on a very tight present budget this year having just gotten married 6 months ago.  His family (including us) is also 15 people!  So we decided this year our budget would be $100 each for our gifts to each other.  Im sure we will each go over a tiny bit but were trying to stick close to that.  No idea what Im going to get him!  Last year we spend about $250 on each other.

$10! We're saving for the honeymoon and our tradition is to go all out on our birthdays which are 10 days apart :)

We also have a lot of people to buy for! 7 nieces and nephews, three sets of parents, grandparents, four siblings, two pollyannas and a few miscellaneous. I'm paying cash for all of it, but wow! And we're flying to MI for Xmas to stay with his family. Oh, and my sister just got married this past weekend which cost us around $1,500.

@moderndaisy - wow! that's a lot of presents to buy. we're lucky, i guess, we both only have 1 sibling and there are no nieces or nephews, and only 2 living grandparents (that's not so lucky :( )
