Our photographer includes engagement sessions in all of her packages, but it would be naive to say we were getting this session for free! I guess it depends on who your photog is and how expensive their regulr packages are, but I would guess $300-400 is probably normal? In any case, I think they are totally worth it and that you should try to do them if your budget allows!
Mine were $200 CDN in Ottawa, ON .... but I think it really depends on how frequently the photographer does them and whether you plan on having the same one do your wedding pics!
Ours were $400 with the amazing Travis Hoehne, it included all digital prints too. Completely and totally worth it.
$0... have a friend take them for you. You can even take that $200-$300 you would spend on professional ones and get a nice camera and use that. You even get to keep the camera! Just go on shutterfly afterwards and choose your prints! So easy and cheap!
Mine were $200 CDN *Toronto Ontario* which included a 2 hour shoot, 25 of the 250 shots were edited/enhanced, and we also received the photos on a high resolution disc to save some money and print our own. I feel they are totally worth it!
$0...my fiance is a photog so he actually set the timer and did ours. We didn't require many since we have so many wonderful photos from our time together, but I would second, get a friend.
We switched the engagement shoot and instead will have the photographer at the rehearsal dinner. A friend of us with a super duper camera will do the engagement pics. I think the value in engagement pics is for you and the photographer to get to know each other.
We ultimately decided that to be kind to our budget, we would not do an engagement shoot with our *amazing* wedding photographer. (She charges $500). Fiance's best friend is a photojournalism student, so we got really different and interesting photos that are not your typical engagement photos for the price of a beer and burrito!
$125. by my friend who is a part-time professional photographer, full time mom to two adorable babies. I am in the Dallas, TX area. She told me to not pay her, and when I insisted, she said to just pay her what was in my budget. That turned out to be a huge blessing, because at the time I had not idea wedding photography could be so expensive. I think we will end up paying her about $900 total (e-pics, bridals, wedding), and this includes all the digital files.

Our engagement session was included in our wedding photo package. We spent $1400 total on everything. Our session lasted about 2 hours,we did one change of clothes, and had them taken on the campus of UCLA in three different areas.
It ranges, depending on what you want and your photographer. If you only want a few general pictures for an announcement, budget little for it or have a friend take some at your setting of choice. If you want to have a series of images to use/show for/at the wedding, and have a keepsake series of images to compliment your wedding images, then have your photographer do them.
If you choose to do an engagement session with your photographer, have in mind what you'd like, no different from what you'd want out of your wedding covereage. (e.g. digital files, prints, signature mat, etc)
Generally, it's great to do one. Not just for the photographer and you to get to know each other either. It's a great opp for you to know how your photographer operates and how he/she treats his/her clients. Budget for any fees if you want to be at a specific location/park/venue that might charge them.
Below is a rough breakout of typical pricing you'll encounter currently, by no means comprehensive, but hopefully helpful:
note: any (a)...(e) sub points would be "or/and" depending on photographer.
1) Free; and clear as to what is delivered to you.
a) price is probably already built into your "package"
b) session might be shorter than usual sessions
c) your photographer wants to build up more experience
d) you'll know what it'll include and what you'll have to pay more for
In all cases here, as long as you know what you'll get, it's great to have them done.
2) Free, or very cheap compared to your total photography cost. *And not clear as to what is delivered to you.*
a) just unclear communication, so same as (1)
b) you'll not receive anything, or very little, and it'll turn out to be like a "free portrait sitting" but you'll have to purchase anything you'd like. And the experience ranges from pleasant to car-sales-pressure-silliness.
In (2b), I don't speak for other photographers, but imho, do feel that if you're not told upfront, such practices are bad and give brides/clients a bad taste of the photography industry. And it'll also indicate potential sales pressure with your wedding photos/album down the road. I think there was a thread "Engagement pictures: is this normal?" where someone experienced this. Avoid being here.
3) up to $250.
a) shorter/single location session
b) longer session depending on photographer.
This should provide you what you need in terms of files, a few prints.
4) up to $500.
a) more comprehensive session.
b) is (3) bundled with some product you might additionally want
This should provides you what you need in terms of files, etc. You should be able to have what you want, between (3) and (4), at about your photographer's regular portrait rates for repeat/frequent portrait clients.
5) up to $1000, and above.
a) specific to photographer
b) specific to locations
This generally includes additional items like framed/matted prints, signature mats, albums or guest signature books, etc.
Once you schedule it, have lots of fun, enjoy yourself!
Hope this helps and if you actually read all that.... here's a recent urban engagement session that'll hopefully inspire you to have an engagement session done:

We paid $125 for about a $300 package (I know the photographers and they gave us a referral discount as I tell everyone about them!)
This included 2.5 hours and 2 locations, and a cd of the pictures to print or use ourselves.
You can find the photography website here, and our pictures here
Our were free also! My FH's uncle did them for us. He is also going to be taking our wedding pictures as our wedding gift. Im so thankful! From what I hear the photog can be one of the most expensive parts of your wedding! And he did an amazing job on our engagemnt pics, so im not the least bit worried I wont be happy with the day of pics.
The photographers that I contacted in Chicago ran from $200 - $300. I think a lot of photographers will include it in the wedding package (if you use the same one, that is!). Ask yours if they will!
I don't think they should run much more than that. Hope this helps!
we haven't taken ours yet, but they were included in our wedding package ($6000). seems quite expensive, i know. but for us we know that we're going to get what we're paying for. also, you have to factor in the cost of living wherever you are 'cause in DC (where i live now) the cost of living is much higher than when i used to live in TX. a photog like who we've hired here would go for about $4000 if she were in TX. huge difference right!?
HTH!! ![]()
Our session was included with our wedding day package. We probably wouldn't have done it otherwise, and I even tried to "trade" the e-shoot for something else, but our photographer makes the e-shoot mandatory, so she can get used to working with us and seeing how we photograph before the big day.
It was totally worth it; we LOVE our pictures and have used them for holiday gifts, christmas cards, will use them for wedding stuff etc. And it is nice to have some quality photos of us. See if you can find a photographer with an included e-shoot! :)
We paid $1,100 in NYC. It included two phoographers for three hours, but we ended up spending about 4hrs with them. We got about 650 pictures on CD and roughly 350 prints (regular postcard size). We looked at several photographers, but the ones we liked started around $500 for one photographer usually for two hours.
The pictures came out great and we absolutely loved the photographers, so it was worth it. We are not doing engagement party and our wedding will be smaller so we splurged on this. Also NYC is much more expensive than anywhere else in the country.
Ours is included as well. If it is not for you, try the suggestions with new photographers or Craigslist if you're on a low budget, I'm sure there are tons of photographers needing to make a portfolio! Good luck!
During negotiating with our photographer, we got him to throw in a free session in Central Park as part of our overall package.
I live just south of Houston and our photographer is taken our engagement pictures for 300.00 that is two sites ( One set on the fire truck and the others on the Jetty's). So I was really excited about the cost! And he is really great. I can't wait to take the fun ones on the truck!!
mine were $150, two photographers... I ended up with 108 edited images on a disk
Ours was included in the package, so I'm not sure what it would be separate. Maybe you could ask some of the Weddingbee Pros?
Like others, ours was part of our package, so I'm not too sure what it would cost seperately.
We chose our photographer in part because he did an engagement shoot with every couple. But, he says on his web site that he will do any engagement shoot for $300. (this in in the D.C. area - his lowest wedding day package price was around $2500).
We were lucky to find a photographer who is just starting to build her portforlio. We paid $ 50 for a 1 hr session (i/2 hour outdoors in the park and 1/2 hour in the studio). Photos were fantastic and we got a lot of compliments
Mine was $250 in Denver, CO. We had the option of doing a shoot at her studio or at an outside location... we ended up shooting at several locations in & around Estes Park, CO (where we're getting married) and she ended up spending two days with us in total... We got 144 edited photos from the session, and it also included a print up to 8x10 with a museum quality matte, in a black portfolio with 4 archival pens for signing... we're using it in place of a guest book since we're having a smaller wedding.
For those who got a freebie, I am so jealous. Thanks for sharing, now I have a ball park idea.
Nothin. I have a slightly artistically inclined roommate and we headed out to our college campus in the fall and had fun.
Our engagement pictures session was included in the package we got from our photographer. We asked if we could opt out of the E-pics and get a cheaper rate. Our photographer said if we didn't want to do the E-pics, we could get a $500 credit on pictures we ordered through her. The thing is...she's giving us high quality digital proofs of all our images, so we didn't plan on ordering any pictures through her. We decided to go ahead and do the E-pics, and I am very glad we did. They turned out great.
My husband and I are photographers, so we did our own for free. We used a tripod, remote, and our trampoline in the backyard.
It was totally fun and they came out great, but looking back, I wish we'd had someone else take them because we were a little limited. Actually, I am thinking of hiring someone to do an anniversary session for us-because ironically, us photographers do not have many great photos of ourselves together!

Hi, I have seen a lot of engagement pictures on this website, but no one has really discussed about the price of these photos. I really want to know so that I can budget wisely and know what to expect. If it is too expensive, then I will maybe just skip it altogether. Please do share some insight. Thanks.
