I recently contacted a hair and makeup artist I’m interested in booking. She told me that a hair trial is $125 and a makeup trial is $99. This seems very high to me – she’s basically charging the same as she does for an actual wedding. I understand that I need to pay her for her time, but that’s a lot of money!

TGold: Mine charged $60 for a hair trial and $40 for makeup – so that does seem quite high! Where are you located?

I’m in NYC, but this person is in New Haven, CT. Her prices for the day of the wedding are very reasonable, but if she’s also charging those same prices for a trial, that’s not great for my budget.<br />

My hair and makeup trial were free when I booked with my hairstylist and her MUA. That’s part of the reason I went with their services, lol… I love a good bargain.

TGold: That’s high for this area. How far away do you mind going? I love my make up artist. She’s $60 (for trial and the day of) but she’s in Avon, CT

Mine charged the same amount she charged for the actual day of hair and makeup. Made sense to me because I wanted to see exactly how it would be done so it takes her the same amount of time even though it’s a trial.

BeachBride2014: My wedding is in Central Massachusetts, so it’s more a matter of someone that can travel there. I don’t mind driving anywhere for the trial!

Mine charged the same for a trial as they did for the day of so I skipped it. But I am not too picky about it and have seen in person them do other bridal parties since I am just going to the salon where I normally get my hair done.
Other area MUA/Stylists included or discounted the trial if you booked with them, but if you did the trial and decided NOT to book with them you would be charged full price for those services and for me these routes were much more expensive to begin with than what I am doing.

TGold: Mine came to $170 total….$170 to have someone make me look like a prostitute.

The cost of my trial was the same as the cost of my day of. It takes the same amount of product and time for a trial as it does on the day of, so I’m not sure why it is presumed that the trial should be less expensive.

Mine was $125 for trial, $125 for day of, and that’s hair only. Depends on quality and whether you like their work.

TGold: My MUA is charging me $100 which includes the trial, wedding day, lip gloss and lashes. My hair will cost me $25 for the trail and $35-45 for the wedding day (because she is travelling to me on my wedding day, the trial I am travelling to her). If you are looking for a new MUA or Hairstylist whom might be a little more budget friendly, ask your vendors for some recommendations. My photographer’s been extremely helpful with suggesting vendors I may be interested in.
