I think this is actually a poll that has not been done!  This one will will definitely differ regionally...

Housing is so expensive in CA that you often get very little for the price. 300k is about entry level here, even for many condos.

I feel like there's a huge difference between some of these numbers. I think it would be more informative to be in 100k increments.

well...... the house we live in hubby paid less than $90K 20yrs ago (thank you for being a smart man hubby!) but the neighbours next door just sold theirs for $850K and the new owners are renting it out at $580 per week so who knows what it would cost if we bought at todays prices

eloping Makes a good point.  So does KLP2010

And what it is worth is different from what it cost.

I agree, there should be some under $150k. (especially for what homes are going for in this economy.)

And cbee is right. My house is worth more than what I paid for it, good thing.:)

I live in Kansas City. We bought a 3 bedroom house with a huge yard for $140K.

I do understand where you're coming from living in California. My sister lived there for a while (San Jose), had a tiny little house for $300K+ that needed an additional $50K worth of repairs and fix-ups to even be livable!

How does it affect the poll if you add more options later?  I tried to pick an even increment so that you could truly compare the bars, but I'll add more if everyone would like.

Just an under 100k option?  Or do you want more than that?

I think an under $100k would be fine. I'm not sure how it would change it.

Gotta love Pittsburgh cost of living...our house was $70k, its a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, finished basement, HUGE fenced in yard, 2 car garage, with a pool. It really is a starter home though (not many ugdates, and one bathroom is tough sometimes) and we don't plan on staying long, but its our home for now!

Our two bedroom condo (850 sq ft) was bought three years ago for $234,000.  Today we could sell it for maybe $227ish.

@Mrs Green Grass: It pours rain from about October-April here.  I have no idea how we get away with the sunshine tax applied to Vancouver housing prices.

I had already voted before the poll changed(100-150k).

We bought a 1.5 storey 1200sq.ft., 2bdrm/1bath "starter" house with an unfinished walk out (above ground) basement on 3 lots(3/4acres) for under 100k (closer to 70k). Though there is some work to be done on the house/property, it is pretty minimal in comparison to some of the similarly priced houses on the market here.

Nicer houses here (the ones on the lake) are usually about 2-3000sq.ft. 3-4bdrm, 2bath ranging from 300-500k.

We bought a home in NC. 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 2 story, 2 car garage, 1600 feet for $160k. Same house in CA would be SOOOO out of our price range!

Crap. I didn't even scroll down to it. I'm a ditz sometimes. Mine was $70k, 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, 2 car garage, built in 2007. It was foreclosed on, then bought by a company which sold it to me.

@Mrs Green Grass: it's just a figure of speech for why everything is more expensive/people get paid less in places that have nice weather, because people will put up with it to live there.

I totally didn't realize it wasn't a common term, but a google search tells me it's a regional term that originated in my Okanagan home town...

We paid $365K in 2009 for a modest sized 3-BR 2.5-bath townhome with fully-fenced backyard, amazing modern kitchen, views, and private garage in one of the best neighborhoods (in my humble opinion) in our wonderful city. Definitely no "sunshine tax" in our rainy locale, but there's a hell of a markup for just living in the city within walking distance of grocery stores, restaurants, bars, parks, mass transit, and farmers markets. Fireplace, eco-friendly bamboo floors and super-efficient heating and cooling, I could go on - I think we got a steal. But I know the price we paid would be unbelievable in many other towns and suburbs for such a small home. We could call it the "walkability tax?" :)

@SapphireSun: Gotta love Google!  I guess I may have heard it before, but I was in shock that there was a "tax" for sunshine and probably not reading very carefully!  : )

I feel like I need a disclaimer before adding my house, that I could never have afforded this without my accomplished DH who is 11 years older than me.  I'm a teacher... We have a 3 bed 3 bath house in San Diego and paid $715k.  It's a little under 2000 sq ft.  It's got some great upgrades and we have a view of the water from our upstairs bedroom window.  Even a partial view adds a ton to the price.

We paid right around $250k for a 3 bed, 1.5 bath condo in 2007, thats about 1200 square feet. Its in an older home thats been converted to 2 condos, so it's not some monochromatic "condo building", which is cool. We could have bought a cheaper place, but it was completely remodeled right before we bought it - new granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, finished wood floors and a stained glass window. It's held its value (according to 2 different realtors) through the recession. We'll see when we go to sell in another year or so.....

In texas where I'm from, starter homes are in the $90-150 range.... starters who buy at 150 are "rich" lol. Starter homes in my area of VA are about $250, we found a foreclosure under that and current value is about 40-50k more than what we paid and put into it so far. Basically, I have dreams of selling this house and moving back to Texas to live in a mansion... lol.

My parents bought their house, a 4-bedroom bed & breakfast fully furnished, for like $70K. However, it's in a tiny little Kansas town (600 people) where the nearest mall or Walmart is an hour and a half drive away (over 70 miles). The high school football team plays 6 and 8 man football, and only has a 40-yard line in the center of the field! Bowling or a movie theater is about 30 miles away.

It's a trade-off; it really depends on what you are willing to live with and without. To some people it's heaven, to others it's hell.

@abbyful: you can find 1600 sq foot houses in the community next to one of the fastest growing communities in america for $85... 2500 sq ft from $130 NEW. There's NO trade-off there. Walmart, target, Jimmy Choo.... lol

    Oh Texas, I miss you!

Ugh.... housing prices around Boston are very high!

It's not just the price of the actual house though... it's the property taxes, utilities, etc, etc.... the whole "cost of living" factor...

We havent purchased yet but in the town we currently live in (and hope to buy in), home prices have nearly doubled due to a HUGE chip plant being built here. Before the chip plant, we could have purchased a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom house for $150,000. Now, we'd be looking at closer to $300,000 for anything that we would consider buying. It also doesn't help that our current condo has given us some pretty high standards that we're not willing to compromise on.

Well, cost of living isn't crazy in St. Louis. Most starter homes are in the 100-120K range (at least for our friends and their salaries are higher than most--you could easily get a decent home under 100K i bet! ). 230K got us 2,000 square feet, 4 bedrooms, a finished basement, 1.5 bath, and one of the best school districts around. I'd like to stay until we can move into a home in the next subdivision over--3500 square feet, 550K, vaulted ceilings, open floor plan, swoon. I'm perfectly content to stay put for about 10 years though. I hate moving.

California is pretty ridiculous as far as homes, though. Now that I know what my folks sold their home for, I can easily see how they were able to retire so young :P

@ejs4y8: My grandma bought my childhood home in San Diego for $70k in 1981.  My mom sold it in 2004 for nearly $400k!  We bought after the bubble, but even so our house will never appreciate like that.

I am AMAZED at the price differences in houses by region! I live just outside of Washington DC and you basically have to spend at least $300,000 to get anything decent around here! We currently rent a 3 bed 2 bath home that is 10 miles from downtown DC and it would probably cost us around that much.

wow this poll is depressing me LOL housing is pretty expensive in Alberta! We bought our first home before the housing boom, it cost us $100,00 for an older 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom duplex. (3 bedrooms upstairs, 2 bedrooms and a half bath downstairs) Our kitchen is TINY. SO got transferred an hour away, now we are renting out our duplex and renting a house in our new town. Still looking to buy a new house, but we're going to get married first. A decent 1200sq ft house with 3-4 bedrooms and a garage goes for like 340-400 thousand dollars! a house with more than 1800sq ft starts at 450,000!
