I’m not sure if this even the right forum to ask; however if anyone here know or know someone that know, let me know if it’s reasonable.
Today we met a carpenter and he charges around $100 an hour. We just need a piece of wood, cut, sand, clean and apply varnish (or whatever the coating to project the wood and make it shine). No decoration. It’s abut 4 hours of work plus the price of wood equal $500. Does it seem reaonable? I did a search online and according to Yahoo answer, it’s about $30 – $40 an hour.
We are using this in lieu of guest book and will hang it on the wall. So a guest book of $500???? I was hoping to spend the maximum about $200.

Have you considered doing it yourself? It doesn’t seem like you want something overly complicated.

That sounds easy enough that you or your Fi could probably do it for much cheaper. You can buy the wood at Home Depot or Lowe’s, and they will cut it for free.
Carpenter rates vary widely from place to place, but that does seem high to me

You can get wood cut to size for cheap at Home Depot. Then varnish yourself.
Carpenter rates vary widely based upon experience and region.

Unfortunately we don’t have an equipment to cut, sand and applying the coating at home. Neither FI and I are the crafty (DYI) type, so we want a professional or at least someone know what they are doing.
The wood according to him is less than $100 (depends on the type of wood, we want black walnut), so the majority of the fees goes into labor work. It just seem like $400 for labor is steep to me. FI is already sold on it, but I think we need to shop around for more or forget the idea of wood board for guest book.

@cutexkitty: Well, I’ve been thinking about repainting some wood which is basically the same process. It doesn”t seem that hard
A sander is like 30-60 bucks, you can get the wood cut wherever you buy it, and applying the coating really doesn’t require special equipment.
Do you have an inspiration picture?

Don’t pay $500 for this. It’s such a ripoff. Sanding and varnishing is sooo easy. Look at some YouTubes – you’ll see.

That sounds like so much money. Honestly.
If you don’t have the tool to cut it, can’t you buy a precut piece of wood, and do the rest yourself?
Sanding, is time consuming, and if you don’t have a power sander that can be such a pain. But you might even be able to buy precut, pre sanded wood.
If buying precut, presanded wood is not an option. Then I wonder if you know any carpenters yourself, like a friend. Usually they have those types of tools, and you could always just ask to borrow them for a case of beer, or a dinner. Or even outsource, at a local woodshop class at a local school, and see if they’ll do it for you guys for free, or for some money or a pizza lunch.
Either way 400 bucks is such a rip off, as my fiance could do that in less than 2 hours, and would never dream of charging that much. Shop around whatever you do.
