My brother is an aspiring news videographer but also does some video work for people on the side.  He has been asked to videograph a wedding as is unsure what to charge. The wedding will be in the midwest (Rural Iowa or Rural Illinois, he doesn't know for sure)

    Here is what he provides:

    • 2-3 cameras set up
    • Wireless Mikes (which he used for my wedding and it was awesome to be able to hear us on the video!)
    • Will edit using a mixer and will have the final product 2-3 weeks following the wedding (of course this will be beginner editing, but still time and effort will be put into it)
    • And will be at the reception for 2-3 hours

My question: What would you consider a fair price for his service on the day of your wedding?  Or what have you seen videographers charge for the same type of package?

Any help is very appreciated!  Thanks Bees!

I'm going to put my 2 cents in but it's probably not even worth that. I have no idea but my guess given that he's starting out is to do somewhere in the $600 - $800 range. I had two people shooting the wedding and it was $2800. They have now raised their prices.

Check out the local competition and then he should expect to discount a bit because he doesn't have as much experience yet.

He's heard prices in the area that range from $500 to $3000. He has no clue what to charge.

Personally I'd be a bit shy to hit the upper range. If the range is that big he could probably go for $1000 which leaves some negotiatiing room. If he doesn't have an extensive portfolio it might be hard to sell anyone on paying more than that. Again just my 2 cents.

If this is his first time, I'd figure out the lowest profit margin he's willing to take and call that the bare minimum, then figure out what profit margin he would want and what the highest he'd be willing to pay for his quality of work would be and ask for that.  If they haggle, don't go below the bare minimum.

I know I wouldn't pay more than $500 for a videographer, but videography isn't important for me.

I don't think he would go more than a few hundred dollars.  My guess is $500 at the most.  Which is what I said he should go with, so we will see.
